Friday Read | : "These woodworkers at Melbourne Design Week are building on sustainability." ABC News features four Craft Members and their involvement in this year's Design Week – Jess Humspton, Isabel Avendaño-Hazbún, Georgie Szymanski and Raven Mahon.

“The rise of the small design studio is where they are thriving as they explore circular-economy ideals and sustainable practices while driving a new narrative in design that's emotive, thoughtful and cutting-edge.”

Last week we held our inaugural Tiny Gala – a fabulously intimate evening in support of our Visionaries program, in partnership with Supernormal.

On the night, gathered with a very select group of luminaries across diverse industries, we were thrilled to share our vision for the future of Craft.

We believe that future begins with Visionaries – our flagship exhibition that connects artists with industry change-makers.

We look forward to sharing more on this soon.

Our huge thanks to our partners:

We're proud to collaborate with our fellow organisations in the Australian craft and design sector to amplify an important call to action.

The Australian Government is developing a new National Cultural Policy. We're calling for proper recognition and investment in Australia's craft and design sector, skilled designers and makers working across this country who deserve a policy framework that matches their contribution.

Anyone can make a submission – add your voice before the deadline – 24 May.

Friday Watch | Enter Bolaji Teniola’s studio, as he talks through the making of The Omi Vessel, showing at Craft in Felled, 2026 for Melbourne Design Week.

The vessel takes its form from Nigerian water pots, constructed from 888 hand-planed timber shavings – sourced from a Cypress tree that once served as a windbreaker on a Victorian dairy farm.

Felled in the making | From roots to leaves – the seven exhibitors take a holistic approach, to minimise waste and maximise respect for timber as a once-living organism.

The makers question what can be considered 'low-grade' or 'difficult' timber and work with parts that are traditionally disregarded – from banksia pods and timber shavings to invasive trees destined for pulping, the artists reveal the beauty and possibilities in wood we’re quick to overlook.
