Awelye (Women’s Ceremony) for Alpar (Rat-Tail Plant) by Rosemary Bird Mpetyane
This plant can be found in abundance throughout Rosemary’s Country, Ilkawerne. The long, green tendrils of the rat-tail plant are covered in shiny black seeds.
When ground into powder, the seeds can be used to make bread. If mixed with water or animal fat, they can be used for bush medicine.
Awelye ceremonies are performed to help encourage the constant growth of this plant so that it may support the community.
For many years, Rosemary painted this subject in a traditional style — using earthy tones, classical dot work and symbols.
More recently, she has favoured a contemporary style. Using bright colours and a free-flowing structure, Rosemary beautifully translates her heritage into a modern design.
