Mbantua Gallery is located in the Central Australia town of Alice Springs and presents Aboriginal Art mainly from the Utopia region. The gallery displays beautiful works of art along with smaller gift items made in Australia.

Atham-areny Story by Angelina Ngale

On a trip home to Utopia in January 2003 with Mbantua's field team, Angelina showed us the site of the Atham-areny story and agreed to paint this story for us.

Atham-areny comes from the Anmatyerre words atham (meaning no fire) and areny (meaning belonging to).

These creatures can be known to come out of their homes and steal and hide the children in the community so it is important that they stay by the fire.

Angelina’s Atham-areny paintings depict the women prepared to sing and dance with witch doctors to draw sickness out of those touched by the creatures.

This striking artwork by Abie Loy Kemarre is currently 30% off!

In Bush Medicine Leaf artworks, Abie depicts the leaf of the antywerleny (Acacia Tenuissima), a type of wattle.

The leaves of the antywerleny are crushed and mixed with animal fat for use as a medicinal ointment, or soaked in water to make a medicinal wash.

Angkwerrpme (Mistletoe) by Josepha Petrick Kemarre

Angkwerrpme is the name for Mistletoe in Josepha's language. There are many different types of angkwerrpme in Central Australia, where all but one or two produce edible berries.

Josepha paints one that has sweet edible berries that can be found in shades of yellow, red, orange and purple (or black) in their different stages of maturity.
