Tjanpi Desert Weavers

Tjanpi Desert Weavers Social Enterprise for Indigenous women from the NPY central desert region

Tjanpi Desert Weavers is a not-for-profit Indigenous social enterprise of Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (NPY) Women's Council. Out of a need for meaningful and appropriate employment, NPY members created Tjanpi to enable women on the lands to earn a regular income from selling their fibre art. Tjanpi (meaning β€˜grass’) supports the production and marketing of baskets, sculptures and

seed jewellery made by over 400 artists from 28 remote communities across three states - WA, NT and SA.

This week in Naarm (Melboune) // AT THE CENTRE β˜€οΈ
At The Centre brings together artists from Central and Western Desert Art Centres at Brunswick Street Gallery. The exhibition shares stories and the enduring connections to Ngura (home, place and Country) from the heart of Central Australia.

Tjanpi are presenting a collection of works by eleven senior and emerging artists, reflecting the intergenerational sharing of knowledge across NPY communities from kami (grandmothers), ngunytju (mothers), untal(pa) (daughters), kangkuru (sisters) and kuntili (aunties).

All works are available to purchase, and we kindly invite you to the opening night on Friday 29 May from 6pm - 8pm at .

Due to some recent rains the tjanpi was fresh, green and silky. This then requires a period of drying it out in the sun, ready to be shaped, coiled and finally stitched with raffia into a beautiful basket or sculpture.
