It’s that special time of year to celebrate the wonder of mothers!
Knowledge is often passed down patrilineal and matrilineal kinship lines in Aboriginal cultures, and this knowledge inherently holds generational stories that celebrate women in a variety of ways - the immeasurable value of their role in communities as mothers, nurturers, providers, custodians, teachers and trailblazers. Today, this celebration extends to artmaking practice, allowing mothers and daughters to learn, teach and paint together - like Alison and her daughter Amelia in the picture above!

Art exists to communicate that which goes beyond words - we are thrilled to represent artists whose practice represents, in a variety of ways, the beautiful bonds of womanhood and motherhood, steeped in culture and tradition as old as time.

P.S. Don’t miss out on our 15% OFF sale, ending midnight this Sunday 10th of May! Use discount code MOTHERSDAY at the online checkout to claim.

We can’t resist sharing details from sweet Evelyn Daniels’ work - her eye for detail is unmatched! Each painting of hers contains a range of smaller scenes and perfectly captures the passing moments of life out bush - women cooking Malu wipu (kangaroo tail), bush damper and billy tea over the fire; men hunting perentie; watchful camp dogs noticing the passing family of emus, as a start!
Evelyn always includes a range of native flora in her paintings; poached egg daisies, spinifex grass, kampurarpa (bush tomatoes) and malu kuru (Sturt’s desert pea).

We have some very sweet new works in the gallery from the very sweet Evelyn Daniels!
Evelyn paints her memories of growing up in Papunya and learning inma (ceremony) from her aunties and grandmothers after school. We love her incredible eye for detail, and the tender quality of her canvases, creating little windows into her memories of community life as a young girl.

We also have exciting announcement involving Evelyn’s work, coming soon! 👀

We had the pleasure of hosting Debra Nangala McDonald in our studio this week, completing some beautiful Watiya (mulga tree) pieces!

Debra McDonald’s husband was the son of renowned artist Mitjili Naparrula (1945-2019), and over the years Debra and Mitjili became inseparable, spending days and weeks on end painting together. Mitjili gave Debra permission to incorporate her Watiya (Mulga) design into her paintings, and after Mitjili’s death, her family gave permission for Debra to continue painting the Watiya story in full. Debra says that she still thinks of Mitjili when she paints the Watiya story.

Mulga (acacia aneura) is a native wattle plant, a member of the acacia genus. It is an evergreen shrub that dominates arid outback areas of Australia. This tree is deeply important to Indigenous people of the desert regions as a significant provider; the seeds of the mulga tree are edible, and beloved bush tuckers of witchetty grubs and honey ants can be found underground within their root systems. The hard wood of the watiya trees are ideal for making wooden objects, and is used to hand-carve weapons, coolamons, and ceremonial objects.

Head to our website or follow the link in our instagram story to see her 2 new works! 🌝✨
