Iltja Ntjarra Many Hands Art Centre The Art Centre is Aboriginal owned producing ethical and authentic landscape paintings in the tradit It is the home of the Namatjira watercolour artists.

Iltja Ntjarra (Many Hands) Art Centre is proudly Aboriginal owned and operated. The not-for-profit organisation started operating in 2004 as an art centre established to provide a place for Arrernte Artists to come together to paint, share and learn new techniques and ideas. The art centre is strongly committed to improving economic participation of Aboriginal people and maintaining cultural heritage. The art centre is supported through the Australian Government’s Indigenous Visual Arts Industry Support program. Iltja Ntjarra has a special focus on supporting the ‘Hermannsburg School’ style watercolour artists, who continue to paint in the tradition of their grandfather and relative, Albert Namatjira, arguably one of Australia’s most famous artists of the 20th century. Albert Namatjira taught his children to follow in his unique style, who have since passed this knowledge on to their children, which has resonated in a legacy of watercolour artists in the Central Desert region. By continuing his legacy, these artists sustain an important piece of living history. Iltja Ntjarra is proud of its ethical work practices, and aims to return the greatest possible percentage of sales to the artist. The things that are most important to us are:

• To welcome all landscape artists to paint with us
• To welcome and encourage youth to paint with us
• To pass down stories about our country and culture
• To teach about the legacy of the Hermannsburg School of Watercolour art movement
• To tell stories of learning from our grandfather and relative Albert Namatjira
• To support and keep culture strong
• To promote the effective and ethical sale of artworks
• To provide increased economic benefit directly to the artists through sales, professional development, exhibitions and marketing

Kathy and Dellina Inkamala's works hanging in this years Desert Mob exhibition.

Curated by Hetti Perkins (Arrernte and Kalkadoon) and Aspen Beattie (Luritja, Warumungu and Yawuru), the Desert Mob 2026 exhibition features a curated selection of works from hundreds of artists across 35 art centres. The Desert Mob exhibition is an unmissable opportunity to view and ethically purchase artworks, by emerging and established artists from some of Australia’s most remote Aboriginal communities.

We are excited to be part of this years Desert Mob Artist Talks happening at Araluen Arts Centre tomorrow!

Iltja Ntjarra artists Carita Coulthard, Dellina Inkamala and Mandy Malbunka and studio coordinator Tyler Arnold will be joined in conversation with Alex from Arid Lands Environment Centre to discuss their recent project turning buffel grass into paper, as well as the impacts of buffel grass in central Australia.

Alongside presentations from other art centres, the event is an opportunity to learn about the unique projects that are happening in the vibrant art community of central Australia!

This Saturday 3rd October, the Arid Lands Environment Centre will be launching the National Report on Buffel Grass in person at Olive Pink Botanic Garden! The event will coincide with the closing event for Iltja Ntjarra's exhibition of paintings on buffel grass paper. The morning includes a botanic gardens walk, native plant sale, and floor talks in the gallery with Iltja Ntjarra and special guests including the Invasive Species Council.
