“George Captain, “Skipper” to nearly all who knew him, made art across many genres, styles and mediums throughout his life. His innate sensitivity was immediately apparent to me—sensitivity to color, to balance, to form, and to the overall feeling each artwork conveyed. As I’ve sorted through and sat with these artworks, I’ve been struck by the strong juxtaposition of saturated color and intense, intentional blankness surrounding it. His use of a full range of tonality speaks to the nature of a dedicated observer.”

George “Skipper” Captain
1945-2025
George Captain was born in Manhattan, raised in upstate New York, but spent the majority of his life in Santa Fe, NM, making and accumulating bodies of artwork almost nobody was aware of. He had several notable phases– sand paintings made from soil collected around New Mexico, intense Color Field work in vivid, saturated hues, charcoal portraits of family members and domestic scenes, oil paintings that feel alive and immediate. His earliest surviving work comes from life drawing sessions with n**e models done in 1975, and from these it is easy to see that his sensitivity to color and form were acute from early on. Captain showed only once during his lifetime, in the mid-’90’s at LewAllen Gallery in Santa Fe, where his work found willing collectors. He sold occasionally from his studio, but did not have another show during his lifetime. He was self-taught in all mediums, and avidly studied the work of artists he admired to develop his own style, while honing his skill through repetition and dedicated practice over his lifetime.

“There is a louder side to Captain. Some works are built from charcoal laid down with force, crossing diagonals and verticals gathered into one dense mass against bare paper. The densest of them carry the confidence of Franz Kline’s blunt black statements. Others cut the whole event down to a single black line walking across an empty page, a gesture pared back toward calligraphy.

Albers and Willem de Kooning are the two painters his partner remembers him naming, and what Captain’s loosest works seem to have taken from de Kooning is permission. License to leave a line unresolved. To let a smear stand where a more anxious painter would have imposed shape.

The heroic account of gestural painting demanded that the mark mean everything or nothing.[5] Captain lets it mean one dog, one word, one sound, one interruption, returning the abstract gesture to the scale of a life someone lived. Part adornment, part fastener, and so emblematic of the way that humans throughout time have taken useful, everyday things and made them beautiful as well.

Juan Carlos Caballero-Perez writes about this work “Formed, fabricated, and fused from 18k and 22k gold, powdered enamel with resin on copper, diamonds, felt, and ball-head pins, this piece honors the countless women whose labor as seamstresses and garment workers often remains unseen and undervalued.
The stitched felt and ball-head pins relate directly to sewing and garment-making, referencing the repetitive and demanding nature of this work, while the precious metals and diamonds symbolize the dignity, strength, and worth of these women. The contrast between the materials reflects both the resilience and fragility of lives shaped by long hours of labor and limited recognition.
This piece is a tribute to the women whose skill, dedication, and perseverance have contributed so much, yet whose efforts have too often gone unnoticed. It acknowledges their enduring presence and celebrates the value of their work.”

SUN & DUST PRESENTS a very special show at Relay. ENIGMA: The Work Of George “Skipper” Captain
Works 1975-2023.

ENIGMA: The Work of George “Skipper” Captain, is the first exhibition of a Santa Fe painter whose art practice of more than four decades was conducted thoroughly on his own terms. Working almost entirely outside public view, Captain (b. 1945, Manhattan, NY; d. 2025, Santa Fe, NM), known to all as “Skipper,” built a practice in unbound dry pigment on paper, alongside charcoal drawing, oil painting, and material work incorporating ground soil, dried grass, and salvaged metal. He had no formal training. His education came from books and from exhibition catalogues carried back from New York in the 1970s.

ENIGMA presents more than 150 works across two locations, (SUN & DUST and RELAY) , the majority of which have never been shown. Captain worked in dry pigment, unbound and pressed or rubbed directly into heavy paper. The method permits little correction. Some of that pigment was purchased. Some was gathered from roadsides north and west of Santa Fe and ground by hand. Many of the sheets present two fields of color and the boundary between them. In a smaller group, that boundary drifts rather than rules, and what it encloses reads as a body rather than hard geometry. Panels built from found matter and compelling detritus carry the earliest dates in the abstract archive. Representational charcoals and oils of considerable skill round out the exhibition. Captain showed publicly only once, at LewAllen Galleries on Galisteo St., in the mid 1990’s. This exhibition by SUN & DUST is the only showing of his work since that time.
