In August 1933, about 93 years ago, 400 cigar makers went on strike at the Finck Cigar Company. They demanded recognition for the Cigar Makers' International Union (CMIU), better wages and better working conditions. The strike ended by December 1935. Although workersโ€™ demands were not met, the strike set an important precedent for future labor organizing.

Cigar maker Marรญa del Refugio Ernst led the 1933 strike against the Finck Cigar Company.
After the cigar makers strike, Refugio continued to advocate for workersโ€™ rights. She participated in a series of garment workersโ€™ strikes the ILGWU organized in 1936-1938.

This year, our Paseo por el Westside also features amazing artists that have been recognized as National Heritage Fellows!
