Casa Navarro State Historic Site

Casa Navarro State Historic Site Located in the heart of downtown San Antonio, Casa Navarro State Historic Site celebrates the life o Navarro also earned a living through land investment.

José Antonio Navarro was an influential political figure during the momentous 55 years (1810–1865) when Texas’ destiny was forged. Navarro served in Texas legislatures under Mexico, the Republic of Texas and the state of Texas. In addition, he served on the committees that wrote the first two Texas constitutions in 1836 and 1845. Although a prominent, influential leader, Navarro was not a professi

onal politician. As a young man he learned the merchant trade, the occupation of his father. Factories from the United States and Europe sent ships loaded with merchandise to New Orleans, where Navarro arranged to import books, cloth, clothing, wine, sugar, rice and coffee. During the 1830s, he purchased more than 50,000 acres of ranch land at a price of pennies per acre. Because thousands of people were immigrating into Texas, the demand for land increased. Navarro sold portions of his land holdings for up to three dollars per acre. His San Antonio rental properties also produced income. His wife Margarita de la Garza was also a native of San Antonio. Between 1817 and 1837, she bore four sons and three daughters. Numerous descendants live in and around San Antonio, with many more scattered throughout the country. The mission of Casa Navarro is to preserve and maintain the historical integrity of the site’s buildings, while interpreting 19th-century Tejano culture through the life and times of José Antonio Navarro. Casa Navarro State Historic Site is a Texas Historical Commission (THC) property. The THC’s mission is to protect and preserve the state's historic and prehistoric resources for the use, enjoyment and economic benefit of present and future generations.

On August 18, 1813, the Battle of Medina—the deadliest battle in Texas history—was fought just south of San Antonio during the Mexican War of Independence. Spanish Royalist forces defeated the Republican Army of the North, marking a turning point for the region and leading to years of hardship for many of its residents.

José Antonio Navarro was only 18 years old at the time, but the battle deeply affected his family. His uncle, Francisco Ruiz, fought with the Republican Army and was one of the few Tejano participants to survive. Following the battle, Ruiz fled to Louisiana to escape persecution before eventually returning to San Antonio.

The page pictured above comes from Navarro's autobiography. The translated excerpt below shows how Navarro reflected on his uncle's service and the impact the Battle of Medina had on his family:
"In the year of 1813 my Uncle Lieutenant Col. Francisco Ruiz... took a very active part with the Insurgents in the Army of Bexar... First battle which he fought on the Medina... Imagine now to yourselves the position of my whole family, with the loss of the cause of liberty by the Battle of Medina."

The Battle of Medina remains one of the most significant—and often overlooked—events in Texas history, shaping the lives of many families in San Antonio, including the Navarros.

On this day in 1973, the San Antonio Light reported on an exploration of Casa Navarro's original cistern by members of the San Antonio Cave Research Society.
The five spelunkers wanted to investigate the cistern after local stories suggested it might be connected to an underground tunnel beneath the Navarro home. Getting permission from the San Antonio Conservation Society, who owned the site at the time, the team went to work exploring the cistern 🔦While no tunnel was discovered, the team documented the cistern's construction, uncovered a second cistern, and found a collection of modern bottles and cans left behind over the years.

Their exploration gave preservationists a better understanding of the cistern's condition and helped inform future restoration efforts at the site.
Today, the original cistern remains an important feature of Casa Navarro. Be sure to stop by on your next visit and check out this fascinating piece of the site's history!
