UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures The Institute of Texan Cultures is open at its new location, 111 W. Houston St., Ste. 100 (at Camaron). Houston St., Ste. 100 (at the corner of Camaron Street).

New exhibits, a new mural, and new stories about the cultures shaping Texas. The ITC is currently closed and in transition to a temporary facility at 111 W. We anticipate opening in early 2026 at that location. Behind the scenes, our team is working on preserving artifacts, designing exhibits, preparing digital and educational materials and searching for community outreach opportunities. October is Filipino Heritage Month. Over the years, the Institute of Texan Cultures has built wonderful relationships with the Filipino community and we've appreciated their participation in the Texas Folklife Festival, Asian Festival and Mabuhay exhibit.

We've had a busy start to the fall and we still have Stories in Song and Luminaria ahead of us. The big kick-off of the fall season was Strings of Tradition, which finished out September. Thank-you to partners at the Texas Conjunto Music Hall of Fame & Museum, Zeth Lara and Aaron Salinas for sharing their stories and music with us.

"Come and Take It" Day: Battle of Gonzales: Oct. 2, 1835

Francisco de Castañeda and 100 dragoons were sent to retrieve the cannon from the colony at Gonzales, Texas. Their first confrontation was Sept. 29 with the Old 18 – the militiamen blocking their path into the town. As word reached surrounding settlements, the Texian ranks swelled to 140 and on the night of Oct. 1, the crossed the Guadalupe, approaching Castañeda’s camp. On the morning of Oct. 2, they attacked. Above the cannon flew a battle flag bearing an image of the cannon and the words “Come and Take It.” After parley and negotiation failed, Mexican forces withdrew.
