The Maverick Carter House is celebrating Fiesta with a display of seven Coronation Robes from the three generations of Aline B. Carter.   Aline was also a duchess in the 1914 Court of the Fairies.  The gowns are viewed on each of the three floors of the historic home filled with original Victorian family furniture.  The house is now a nonprofit providing educational programming for music, poetry, astronomy, and art - the things which embodied poet laureate Aline B. Carter.   We welcome you to visit her San Antonio home and celebrate Fiesta the month of April.
The home, a national and state landmark, was designed by noted architect Alfred Giles and built by William Maverick - the son of Samuel Maverick who signed the Declaration of Independence of Texas.  HC and Aline Carter bought the house from the Mavericks and we now share her legacy of stewardship of the house and programming for students.  Please enjoy!

Happy Texas Poetry Day!

Texas Poet Laureate Aline B. Carter, with Lucia Trent, poet and poetry critic of San Antonio, co-founded of Poetry Day in Texas. These two were instrumental in having the definite date of October 15 established for its observance by the late Governor Beauford H. Jester in 1948, in order that citizens might have the opportunity of honoring the poets of the state, both living and deceased, who have made contributions to the culture of the Lone Star State.

In that spirit, the Maverick Carter House hosts an annual poetry competition each year with a new theme. This year the theme was "Flavors of San Antonio."

We are grateful San Antonio Port Laureate and Local San Antonio Poet Eddie Vega judged the competition in April 2023. We are also proud to learn our first place winner, writer of "Moonlight On the Ganges Riverwalk," is Yale bound! Congratulations to all the students and good luck with all your future endeavors!

Winning poems may be found on our website under programs: maverickcarterhouse.org

October 14, 2023 annular solar eclipse viewing at the Maverick Carter House!

Great visibility for the eclipse! Greater clarity with the h alpha solar telescope.

Aline B. Carter added the observatory on the Maverick Carter House in 1925. Aline commissioned her friend Ethel Wilson Harris, a noted artisan, to construct the observatory to house her 1918 Bausch & Lomb 4" refractor telescope.
