P-51 Lucy Gal

P-51 Lucy Gal Keeping Them Flying On April 21st, 1945, the city of Rochester, NY lost a war hero. Flight Officer Leland H.

Pennington, a member of the Tuskegee Airmen's 301st Fighter Squadron, was lost while returning to base from combat. A successful bomber es**rt mission over Austria was Leland's last action for the war effort. During this mission, Pennington was flying a P-51B-10 "Mustang" named "Lucy Gal," after his wife back home. We aim to keep Pennington's story, and the story of the Red Tails as a whole, flying. The Pennington P-51 Memorial is a project of Mustang Aviation, LLC.

Some exciting news from the National Warplane Museum - Geneseo Airshow - and for P-51 Lucy Gal!

The museum has received a $20,000 grant to help return its AT-6 Harvard to the air. Leland Pennington's surviving flight records confirm that he trained in the AT-6 before going on to fly P-51 Mustangs with the 332nd Fighter Group.

The Harvard will preserve its own important history while giving the community another flying aircraft through which Leland's story can be told - and an important step toward our ultimate goal with Lucy Gal.

We are deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Anderson's passing. He was a great colleague and friend.

We first met at the museum, volunteering on the Tuskegee History program in the lead-up to airshow. Kids were bussed in from the city to receive a tour of the P-51 and B-17, and then they received a history of the Red Tails from Dr. Anderson and Charles Price.

Dr. Anderson was instrumental in the early days of the P-51 Lucy Gal project, helping me to get in touch with Leland Pennington's family and planning the first steps towards the goal that we continue to pursue today.

Thank you, my friend, for everything. You will be missed.

The Rochester City School District and City Council paid tribute Thursday to David Anderson, a well-known Frederick Douglass historian, following his death at age 96.

We're celebrating by reading through these recently donated North American P-51 and B-25 maintenance manuals, from our friend Mike L.

Thanks for generous donation, Mike! These will come in most handy in the near future. 📚

This past weekend, we had the opportunity to volunteer with the CAF Red Tail Squadron at the Rochester Airshow ✈️

It was a great time, with plenty of interested visitors. Thankful for being able to help tell the story of the Tuskegee Airmen and the P-51 Mustang with this fine group of people - In Leland Pennington’s hometown.

On this , we highlight Leland Pennington's time spent flying the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk while in fighter transition training. 🎯

Pennington had 9 hours and 5 minutes of flight time in the Warhawk. He is pictured here ("Sticky" N.Y.) with his Tuskegee graduating class. 44-G-SE. 🎓

It's the start of a new work-week, but don't despair! We're here to provide you with a much needed spark💥👊
