According to the Landmarks of Monroe County, New York by William F. Peck (1897), "The first settler was Isaac Dean, a native of Vermont, a farmer and miller by occupation, but the exact year of whose settlement has ever been clouded in doubt. Several early authorities have mentioned 1809 as the year, but this is an evident mistake, as several other families were located in the town previous to that time.

It is believed that pioneer Dean came to the region in 1799, settled about a mile south of the center, and that in 1810 he built the famous saw mill that made his name and works especially prominent in local history."
