Exciting update!! The signature Hinchey Homestead fence will be repaired by the end of August. Did you know - fence repairs for historic homes require custom hand-made replacement pickets?! That is why we are asking the community to help support the GHS Fence Fund.

Donations to the Fence Fund are greatly appreciated as the COVID-19 pandemic has limited what the Society can do for fundraising events. Donations are accepted online or checks payable to Gates Historical Society at 634 Hinchey Road, Rochester, NY 14624 with note for the Fence Fund.

From all of us at the GHS, we thank you for your support throughout the years and look forward to seeing you soon at our next event.

It’s hard to believe The Hinchey House has seen 150 Father’s Day celebrations during its existence. Traditions come and go over the years but the bond between a father and a child remains forever. From all of us at The Gates Historical Society, we thank you dads for your endless sacrifices and hope you have the day you deserve.

“Dads are most ordinary men turned by love into heroes, adventurers, storytellers and singers of song” Pam Brown.

According to the Landmarks of Monroe County, New York by William F. Peck (1897), "The first settler was Isaac Dean, a native of Vermont, a farmer and miller by occupation, but the exact year of whose settlement has ever been clouded in doubt. Several early authorities have mentioned 1809 as the year, but this is an evident mistake, as several other families were located in the town previous to that time.

It is believed that pioneer Dean came to the region in 1799, settled about a mile south of the center, and that in 1810 he built the famous saw mill that made his name and works especially prominent in local history."
