Fifty Years Ago at The Genesee Hospital..
Nursing School Graduates 55
Jubilation was the order of the day May 30th, when fifty-five members of The Genesee Hospital School of Nursing's 1976 Graduating class received their diplomas. Keeping with the tradition, joint graduation ceremonies were held with the Highland Hospital School of Nursing at the Nazareth Arts Center. William D. Ryan, president of The Genesee Hospital Board of Governors, was Master of Ceremonies for the event. Guest Speaker at the graduation ceremonies was NY State Assemblyman from the 132nd Legislative District, Thomas Frey. Frey praised the role of nurses in health care today and appraised the graduating seniors of the challenges which they will find as they enter a changing profession. Graduates from The Genesee Hospital School of Nursing were presented their diplomas by Mrs. Eleanor Davis, director of the school and Mrs. Robert Rodwell, president of the School of Nursing Board. Gifts for ICU, Oncology
Young Christopher Files, 10 1/2 months, and his Dad, David Files, returned to RGH one day late in August to make two presentations. Christopher's mother, Roseanna, died of cancer last February, a few months after Christopher's Cesarean birth. Christopher was delivered over a month premature, weighing only 4 lbs, 11 1/2 ounces. He was placed in a Newborn Intensive Care Unit but soon thrived. Roseanna had the joy of his care for several months before she had to return to the hospital. Her last days were spent in the ICU where she often expressed the need for something to relieve the boredom. Following her death, money was collected by David and Christopher to work towards this end, and to help cancer research. Four calendar clocks, and four portable radios, inscribed in Roseanna's memory, were donated to the ICU, and are in use. Dr. James Arseneau, Oncology, accepted a check for $479 for the Oncology Research Fund. Christopher's Mom's wish is being realized. Photo: Christopher and David Files present clocks and radios for use in the ICU. David Watt, Administration, left, and Barbara Humphries, R.N., Oncology Clinic, right, receive gifts in memory of Roseanna Files. (RGH Tempo, September-October 1976)

Fifty Years Ago at St. Mary's..
Sheri Peters folds "Around and About St. Mary's Hospital", a patient newsletter produced daily by Development and Hospital and Community Relations. Sheri edits the news column and TV schedule each morning and adds stock items about hospital activities. Communications prints it and Dietary places the copies on evening meal trays. St. Mary's began the newsletter a year ago and is the only hospital in the region to provide a patient daily. Studies show 70% readership which proves Sheri is doing a great job. Fifty Years Ago at The Genesee Hospital..
This Birth Was A "Big" Event
If his entry into the world is any indication, Cory Louis Albert has a big future ahead of him. The infant son of Chris and Sharon Albert weighed in at 14 pounds, 6 ounces, shortly after his birth at The Genesee Hospital on June 22. He is the couples' first child. Cory's birth created quite a stir among the staff in the Delivery Room for, while searching their memories well, none could remember a larger baby ever being born in Genesee's maternity unit. Dr. John Schultz, Mrs. Albert's obstetrician, noted that Cory was the largest infant he has delivered in 25 years of practice. Mrs. Albert said she was pleasantly surprised when told of Cory's size. Dr. Schultz had told her to expect a 10 or 11 pound child. She said that she was just happy that he was healthy. (The Genesee Inter-com, July-August 1976)

Fifty Years Ago at Unity Hospital..
EEG Service Begins
On June 7th, Dr. Rimma Faerman became the Electroencephalography (EEG) technician for Park Ridge. Dr. Faerman, a Russian educated physician who is not licensed in the U.S., defines an EEG in the following way: "The electroencephalogram, the written record or tracing made on the electroencephalograph, is a series of waves that represent the electrical activity in the brain. These waves vary in shape, duration and voltage. Certain frequencies and wave forms are considered 'normal'; others are considered evidence of 'disease'. Wave frequencies, forms and voltages must be studied to determine whether or not the activity recorded on the electroencephalogram is 'normal'." (Park Bench, June 1976)
