Striving to preserve and make relevant to all audiences the heritage of Planting Fields. Educational programs are offered for children and adults.

Welcome to Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park, Long Island's premier public arboretum and historic site located in Oyster Bay, New York. A former Gold Coast estate, the arboretum is comprised of 409 acres of greenhouses, rolling lawns, formal gardens, woodland paths, and outstanding plant collections. The original historic estate buildings remain including the 65-room Tudor Revival mansion, Coe Hall, which is open for tours spring through fall. The grounds, landscaped by the Olmsted Brothers of Brookline, Massachusetts, are spectacularly beautiful year round. Planting Fields is an ideal location for wedding photography.

Join us for the Planting Fields Fall 5K on October 24! Whether you’re racing the course, walking with friends, or bringing the family out for the Kids Fun Run, it’s a beautiful way to spend an autumn morning at Planting Fields.

Planting Fields Foundation is saddened to learn of the passing of John Dixon Hunt, one of the most influential scholars of his generation on the history and theory of landscapes and gardens, and a friend of Planting Fields.

We were fortunate to welcome Professor Hunt to our 2022 Olmsted Symposium as the keynote speaker. He also contributed to the 2025 publication, Planting Fields: A Place on Long Island, situating the Planting Fields landscape with the broader narrative of English landscape design and the concept of placemaking.

Now Announcing: Catalyst 2026: Fragment of the Foundations for a Babel Tower by Fiona Tan.

Inspired by the myth of the Tower of Babel and the tradition of the garden folly, Tan has imagined the remnant foundations of a tower within the landscape of Planting Fields – a structure that appears both in the process of being created and, at the same time, in ruins.

We invite visitors to wander its pathways and contemplate themes of communication and the human desire to build shared understanding, and how those efforts can be both ambitious and fallible.

There’s more to this portrait than meets the eye.

Hanging above the fireplace in the Great Hall is a portrait of three young Coe children. At first glance, you might assume the youngest is Natalie, the Coe family’s only daughter. But there’s a fascinating surprise: all three children are boys, and the portrait was painted before Natalie was even born.

So why is young Henry dressed so differently from his older brothers?

The answer takes us into the fascinating history of children’s fashion at the turn of the 20th century, when clothing traditions for young children looked very different from what we know today.
