Nearly 200 guests gathered at Planting Fields for a sold-out A Moveable Feast, celebrating the beauty, history, and future of this remarkable estate. Surrounded by breathtaking gardens in full bloom, supporters came together for an unforgettable evening that raised more than $300,000 to help preserve the historic Olmsted Brothers-designed landscape and advance the creation of the highly anticipated Oudolf Garden. ⁠

From remarks and spirited bidding to connections among civic, cultural, and philanthropic leaders, the evening reflected the power of community coming together to invest in the future of Planting Fields. ⁠

This month, we’re celebrating the birthday of W.R. Coe – the visionary whose curiosity, imagination, and love of variety helped shape the wonderland we know as Planting Fields.

Born on June 8, 1869, in Kingswinford, England, W.R. immigrated to the United States with his parents and nine siblings at the age of fourteen.

When W.R. turned 57, a friend gifted him a poem titled “Coe’s 57 Varieties,” celebrating his many passions and adventurous spirit:

“you sail the sea, you roam the plain,
you hunt, you fish, you ride, you eat…”

The poem captured something essential about W.R.: a life enriched by curiosity and countless interests. Thankfully, that love of variety led him to create Planting Fields – a place where gardens, architecture, history, and nature come together in extraordinary ways.

💙 Behind every sparkling reflection at Planting Fields is a dedicated team that makes it possible.

Our Buildings and Grounds Team – Sal pictured here! – works every day to keep the historic pools in the Blue Pool Garden and Circular Pool looking their best. It's a labor of care that helps preserve the beauty of these iconic spaces for everyone who visits.

Lately, that work has included removing rocks, wrappers, dirt, and other items that don't quite belong in the water.

The pools may sparkle like wishing wells, but they're actually historic landscape features that require ongoing care and preservation.
If you're visiting this season, we'd love your help – please place your garbage in the proper receptacles, and if you see something that doesn’t belong in the water, e-mail us at [email protected].

Together, we can help keep these treasured spaces beautiful for future generations.

🌹 Rose Arbor Update for Photographers & Guests

The roses are beginning to bloom – this photo was taken this past Thursday! – and we’re looking forward to welcoming visitors to enjoy one of the most beloved seasonal displays at Planting Fields!

As construction of the Oudolf Garden continues, the south-facing side of the Rose Arbor, nearest the Main Greenhouse, will be unavailable during this year's bloom season and closed to photography.

For those planning portrait sessions, engagement photos, family photos, or other special occasion photography, we recommend utilizing the north-facing side of the Rose Arbor closest to the Main House, which will continue to provide a beautiful backdrop as the roses reach peak bloom later this month.

Thank you for your understanding as we work toward the opening of the Oudolf Garden this October. We can't wait to share this exciting new chapter at Planting Fields with you!

Ready to get your hands dirty? We need you! 🌿

The Oudolf Garden is growing, and tomorrow, Tuesday, June 9, between the hours of 9am-5pm, we’re inviting volunteers to join us on the garden grounds as we bring this landscape to life.

Get ready to roll up your sleeves and dig in! Volunteers will help with a variety of tasks such as planting, mulching, watering, and other hands-on garden work alongside the Oudolf Garden team.

This is a physical and fully outdoor opportunity. Please be prepared to be on your feet and working for a minimum of 4 hours. ☀️💪

🌿 Last week at Planting Fields we gathered in the Blue Pool Garden for an evening celebrating what’s next for the Oudolf Garden, surrounded by leaders in culture, philanthropy, and design, and the unfolding vision of this extraordinary landscape.

Remarks from Planting Fields Foundation’s (the Foundation) Board Chair Duncan Sahner, Acting Commissioner Kathy Moser, the Foundation’s President & CEO Gina Wouters, and landscape designer Piet Oudolf reflected the momentum behind this once-in-a-generation transformation.

🌅 As the sun set over the estate, it was clear: this garden is becoming one of New York's most dynamic new public landscapes.

Designed by Piet Oudolf, it will bring his signature naturalistic planting style and “five-season” approach to Planting Fields, creating a living landscape shaped by movement, texture, and time.

The success of the Oudolf Garden will be shaped by those who choose to be part of it. If you’d like to be involved, there are meaningful ways to leave a lasting mark – from plant, tree, and bench sponsorships to Founding Funder and endowment opportunities.

🌿 This past weekend, we were honored to welcome Piet Oudolf onsite as he walked the future garden with his signature designer’s eye — observing, refining, and making adjustments that continue to shape the rhythm, structure, and seasonal movement of the landscape. With his precision and sensitivity to plant form, Piet continues to guide the vision in real time, ensuring every placement contributes to the living composition imagined for Planting Fields.

🌱 Meanwhile, work on the ground continued throughout the week as the Planting Fields Foundation horticulture team, staff, Service Corps members, and New York State Parks volunteers actively shaped the beds in preparation for layout and planting. Even our landscape has temporarily transformed to support this effort — what was once a staff parking area is now a working Oudolf Garden nursery, filled with over 10,000 young plants that will soon find their place within the design.

✨ Each stage brings us closer to a once-in-a-generation transformation unfolding across the estate.
