LIRR Steam Locomotive #35

LIRR Steam Locomotive #35 Dedicated to the preservation and restoration of former LIRR G5s Steam Locomotive #35 as part of the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum.

LIRR #35 is a 4-6-0 G5s class steam locomotive, built for the Long Island Rail Road in 1928 by the Pennsylvania Railroad's Juniata Shops. The locomotive shuttled commuters between New York City and Long Island in the years that saw the effects of a Depression, a World War, and the rapid development of Long Island. #35 participated in the LIRR's Operation: Changeover end of steam ceremony in Hicks

ville in October of 1955, and after pulling a fan trip a week later, became the last LIRR steam locomotive to officially operate, after more than 12 decades of steam on the railroad.Donated to Nassau County upon retirement, #35 was displayed in Salisbury Park (later Eisenhower Park) until an unsuccessful 1978 attempt to restore the locomotive to operation ultimately left the once majestic engine dismantled and essentially abandoned at the former Mitchel Field Air Force Base. In the early 1990's, a new group took on the task of caring for the locomotive, and became the "Friends of Locomotive #35". This group went on to form the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum, and the locomotive was again relocated in 2001, this time to Oyster Bay. #35 is currently undergoing a cosmetic restoration, as well as mechanical repairs to the frame and running gear, with an ultimate goal of displaying the locomotive in Oyster Bay.

Another successful week in Oyster Bay.
While plenty of work was performed in our yard for new track installation as well as many other projects, Gary is still micro focused on the tender work in preparation for the return of its truck assemblies this year.
More progress shots on our tender’s interior and exterior.

While not a national holiday, a state holiday, or even a local holiday, we at the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum celebrate March 5th as "35 Day".

At the Museum, Locomotive 35 holds a 118.5 ton presence in all of our lives. Her historical significance is without question; just another face in the fleet for her operating career, but now the oldest surviving LIRR locomotive. Her path both to and through preservation has been extraordinary; a survivor multiple times over. But beyond that, she has created friendships and even marriages. Her survival has given rise to a museum which, however small, has an element of community and ambition that should be the envy of any small nonprofit organization. We don't take that for granted.

In the coming months, 35 will begin to reassume her intact form, not seen in decades. Continue watching this page, our Youtube Channel, and our new Instagram page for updates. If you haven't visited us in a while, or have never visited at all, stop by on a Saturday and see what's going on. And please...PLEASE drop us a donation on our GoFundMe so that we will be "Reassembly Ready" when our contract work is complete.

Happy 35 Day!

Hi Everyone,

Three weeks into the New Year; seems like a good time for an update as to where we stand with our project.

We are seeing progress on three different fronts. First, our friends at Next Generation Rail Solutions have been hard at work on the roller bearing conversion for our tender trucks. They have optimistically projected a springtime date for completion of this aspect, and they expect to get into work on the drive rods and valve gear components in the coming weeks and months. Much of the wheel work is now complete, though some machining on the crank pins remains to be done.

Second, the less glamorous administrative side of the project. As we have noted previously, the vast majority of funding for the locomotive reassembly and running gear restoration is being provided by our municipal partners at the Town of Oyster Bay and Nassau County. This funding is provided in the form of reimbursement from the municipalities for money that the Museum lays out for the project. We are happy to report that the Town has begun issuing such reimbursement to the Museum, thereby allowing us to both continue the restoration and also keep the lights on at the Museum!

Lastly, the work on the homefront at our display yard. If you follow the OBRM page, you'll get a sense as to the level of dedication of our volunteers; to say that they go above and beyond is an understatement. In recent weeks and months, we have been hard at work preparing the tender components for reassembly on Track #3 in our yard, which will ultimately be Locomotive #35's home. We have also been painstakingly needlescaling the entire locomotive frame in preparation for on-site work that Next Gen plans on performing in the coming weeks and months.

The future for our beloved Ten Wheeler has never been brighter, and we hope that you will continue to stay tuned as our updates hopefully get more exciting. In the meantime, we would like to remind everyone that there are many aspects of this effort which the Museum itself will have to fund. Trucking, crane rentals, and a sizable remaining portion of the $40,000 contractual obligation that the Museum has in conjunction with the municipal funding. If you like what you see from us, PLEASE consider a donation to our GoFundMe, however large or small. The intended beneficiaries of our efforts are all of you, not just ourselves. Be a part of these fascinating times!

Let's take a look back in time, a time when Locomotive #35 escaped the scrapper's torch for the second time!

From 1956 until the late 1980's, dedicated members of the Long Island Sunrise Trail Chapter NRHS cared for #35. Until 1977, she was displayed in Eisenhower (Salisbury) Park before being partially disassembled and moved to Mitchel Field. This move was necessary due to liability concerns by Nassau County who owned her, but it also prompted her first real attempts at restoration. Throughout the early 80's, the group had her wheels turned at Amtrak's shops while other work was done on site. Attempts were made to find a suitable home for her where she could be operated elsewhere, including Strasburg PA and Flemington NJ, each of which unfortunately fell through. As the years rolled by, frustration grew and interests waned. Her most valuable (and collectible) parts were safeguarded, but the locomotive itself languished in a field, eventually becoming a victim of vandalism. By the end of the decade, proceedings had quietly begun to scrap the locomotive.

In late 1990, another group of eager young train buffs expressed interest in the locomotive, and by spring of 1991 they were granted permission to clean up and paint it. With this effort, scrapping was put on hold. The group continued to grow, unofficially dubbing themselves the Locomotive #35 Restoration Committee.

Working as volunteers for Nassau County Parks, ironically under the umbrella of the Cradle of Aviation Museum, they worked to bring the locomotive back from being an eyesore to an attraction, fenced it in to protect it from further vandalism and began the arduous process of bringing all the removed parts back together. Over the previous decade, many of the parts were stored in and near various County buildings in Mitchel Field. Thus, as they were located, they were brought back to the locomotive site for cataloging, restoration and storage.

The attached photos show Steve Torborg and Bonnie Mitthauer Parker as they oversee the relocation of the locomotive drive rods from an old airplane hanger to the locomotive site. The group would later be incorporated as the Friends of Locomotive #35 Inc. and eventually the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum, and both Bonnie and Steve remain members and active volunteers to this day, 34 years after these photos were taken!

Giving Tuesday Giveaway!

As we approach the end of 2025, #35 needs your support more now than ever. We are now roughly one year into our partnership with Next Generation Rail Solutions to professionally restore the locomotive's running gear in preparation for full reassembly as a mobile active display in Oyster Bay. With many aspects of this work nearing completion, we anticipate that there will be significant trucking and rigging expenses in the coming months...exciting for sure, but also expensive, as these aspects of the project are NOT covered by our grant money from the Town of Oyster Bay and Nassau County.

On this Giving Tuesday, we humbly ask for your continued support. Your generosity really does make a difference here. As an added incentive, the top donor for today will win two coach tickets for a train of your choice on either the Black River & Western Railroad in Ringoes, NJ, or the Delaware River Railroad Excursion in Phillipsburg! Minimum donation $100 for the ticket giveaway, but we of course encourage lower amounts as well!

Train ride tickets will depend on availability for the specific date and railroad you choose. We are not affiliated with either of these organizations. We will contact the winner to make all necessary arrangements.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue through these very exciting times for Locomotive #35!

Today at the Museum, we had a surprise visit from several members of the Model T Ford Club of Long Island. After touring the site and taking a ride on our turntable, they were kind enough to bring in a couple of their Model T's for some photos with #35. These cars are actually older than #35 by more than a decade. We thank these folks for spending the afternoon with us, and for their donation towards #35's restoration!
