🚂🇺🇸 The OBRM Speeder made its parade debut this Memorial Day weekend! 🇺🇸🚂

Despite the rainy weather, the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum was proud to participate in the Oyster Bay Memorial Day Parade with our Model MT-14 Track Speeder making its inaugural appearance!

A huge thank you goes out to Steve and the crew at Wonderland Tree Care for helping place the Speeder on the trailer, and to Dave Golon for expertly driving the unit in the parade. We had a wonderful time waving to spectators and sharing a little piece of railroad history with the community.

The Oyster Bay Railroad Museum Model MT-14 Track Speeder is a later model "section car" built by Fairmont Railway Motors in the mid 1980's for track inspection and maintenance. It has a 14 horsepower gasoline engine designed to carry two men and a trailer for their tools to remote areas of a railroad at track speed. It is equipped with pull-out handles so that workers can easily pick up and turn the unit around to travel in the opposite direction, or to remove it from the track for trains to pass by. While the specific history of our unit is unknown, it is typical of the types of track inspection vehicles most railroads utilized in the US, Canada and Mexico.

The OBRM Speeder is currently undergoing operational restoration and can be viewed at the museum Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4pm.

In the area of railroad restoration and preservation, particularly on Long Island, there are some names that become memorable. Rich Gorddard is one of those names. If you put any time into volunteering for the Railroad Museum of Long Island, Twin Forks Chapter- NRHS or any of the other east end organizations of this nature over the past several decades, you surely ran into him.

Rich was a long time member of several of these groups, and even helped to form some of them, serving as a trustee and active volunteer over several decades. He personally helped to save numerous pieces of historic rail equipment, even being a one time owner of our very own Track Speeder, "Roxie". Rich was highly motivated, passionate and often unwavering in his beliefs. There's no question that his contributions to rail preservation over the years were numerous and his knowledge and experience were highly praised. He will surely be missed.

On behalf of all of us at the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum, we offer our heartfelt condolences to all who knew him!

Today dawned cold and wet, and weather wise, it went down hill from there. However the dedicated volunteers of the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum were undeterred by the rain, showing up in force to do what we do best...restoration, preservation, education and real railroad work! Almost 20 people in fact showed up and worked throughout the day, laying track, restoring historic equipment and tackling a myriad of other projects.

Check out the attached photos and be amazed by the incredible work performed by these amazing people!

In preparation for track laying tomorrow, I post this video of one of our most dedicated volunteers.
Paul is using the gas powered plate tamper to tamp down all of the crushed concrete that was used as a base layer for the railroad ties that we will lay out for the new runoff track. Our plan is to get at least one track completed on Saturday which will be used by our diesel #26.

This Saturday came with a plan. Beautiful weather, lots of volunteers and two short tracks laid by the end of day. Unfortunately due to some showing up late, some leaving early and some not showing at all due to the LIRR strike, the day didn't quite go...well...as planned! Still, as we always do, we pulled together and tackled a bunch of unplanned projects as well as getting all the preparation done for when we do lay the tracks, hopefully next week!

As always, photo captions tell the story of this beautiful sunny day and the amazing volunteers who were able to make it up to the museum.

Did you know that Oyster Bay Station was once the home train station of President Theodore Roosevelt?

At the center of the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum, you’ll find a fascinating exhibit dedicated to Theodore Roosevelt and his deep connection to the railroad and Oyster Bay. Explore 12 exhibit panels featuring historic photographs of TR at the station, giving speeches from observation cars, traveling out west in 1903, visiting the Panama Canal construction in 1906, and even his relationship with beloved LIRR mascot Roxey.

It’s a unique look into history that railroad fans, history buffs, and families alike will enjoy discovering.

Stop by the Historic Railroad Station Building Saturdays & Sundays from 12:00–4:00pm to experience the exhibit and learn more about one of Oyster Bay’s most famous residents!

With Saturday's work session just 3 days away, the dedicated volunteers of the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum have been busy gearing up for the installation of our "run off" tracks. Last Saturday, the crew worked through the rain to move about 3 yards of crushed concrete into place as a bed for the new tracks. This Saturday, they'll level and tamp the stone, and install ties and tie plates. Who knows, if all goes right, they may even get the rail in place as well!

If you're an OBRM volunteer, or if you've thought about joining up, c'mon up this Saturday and help us install more track...another step in the development of YOUR railroad museum!

Today was quite a day. The concept was simple...move 5 or 6 yards of crushed concrete from the point of delivery about 80 feet to another location that's inaccessible to vehicles. However, the "concept" was the only simple part of it. If you've never moved stone or concrete, you have no idea how taxing it is. Yet a dozen amazing volunteers showed up and worked their butts off, even through the rain! Check out these photos of today's work and the incredible people who got the job done!
