✨ AUGUST DUET EXHIBITIONS | Sfumato Art Creatives

This August, we brought together artists whose distinct practices create meaningful conversations across different perspectives, mediums, and experiences.

From memory, nature, and transformation to light, spirituality, identity, and the unseen, each duet offered a unique artistic dialogue—two individual voices coming together while remaining true to their own visual languages.

We’re proud to celebrate the artists who joined us and to share these thoughtful encounters with our audience around the world. 🤍

🖤 New on our blog: Darko Stanic

The Courage to Look at Truth

What happens when art refuses to look away?

In our latest feature, Darko Stanic reflects on the ideas and experiences that shape his sculptural practice—from his questioning of contemporary society and its systems of influence to the personal experiences that have shaped his understanding of vulnerability, resilience, and human existence.

For Stanic, sculpture is not simply about creating an object. It is a process of questioning, discovery, and confrontation. Through raw forms, purposeful materials, and continuous experimentation, he transforms complex ideas into tangible experiences that invite us to look more closely at the world around us.

✨ Read the full article on our website and discover the thoughts behind Stanic’s powerful sculptural practice.

WHERE LIGHT BECOMES MEMORY | A Duet Exhibition featuring Ayako Bando & Helena Rye
Ayako Bando Helena Rye

Helena Rye (b. 1993, Slagelse, Denmark) is a Danish visual artist whose pastel and oil paintings explore spirituality, intuition, and femininity. Through dreamlike compositions featuring florals, butterflies, and angelic forms, she creates meditative worlds that reflect themes of transformation, rebirth, and inner stillness.
Her work is centered around the experience of inner transformation. Rye explores the moments of transition where an old identity has been outgrown, yet a new sense of self has not fully emerged, capturing the vulnerability, uncertainty, and beauty found within this process of becoming.
Nature serves as both a source of inspiration and a symbolic language in her work, where flowers, butterflies, and light become metaphors for cycles of change, renewal, and emotional growth. Through these recurring elements, Rye explores the relationship between the visible and unseen, inviting viewers into moments of contemplation and reflection.

WHERE LIGHT BECOMES MEMORY | A Duet Exhibition featuring Ayako Bando & Helena Rye
Ayako Bando Helena Rye

Ayako Bando is a Japanese artist born in Tokushima, a serene town embraced by mountains, rivers, and blooming land- scapes. She has studied art in Osaka, London, Tokyo, and New York, and currently lives and works in Southwest. Deeply inspired by Wassily Kandinsky, Bando’s work is celebrated for its expressive color and rhythmic depictions of nature in motion. Her ongoing Eternal Light Series, begun in 2014, reflects her exploration of the soul as an inner light and nature’s elements—like the sun and flowers—as outer symbols of purity, hope, and transformation. Using a mix of acrylic, oil, and washi paper collage, Bando creates layered, soulful compositions that evolve with time and memory. Among her many honors are the prestigious Japan Art Academy Award and the Facilitator Award presented by MoMA curator Paulina Pobocha. Through her art, Bando invites viewers to reconnect with their inner light and the enduring power of hope.

WHERE LIGHT BECOMES MEMORY | A Duet Exhibition featuring Ayako Bando & Helena Rye
Ayako Bando Helena Rye

Sfumato Art Creatives is pleased to present Where Light Becomes Memory, a Duet Exhibition bringing together the works of Ayako Bando and Helena Rye in a dialogue exploring light, nature, spirituality, memory, and transformation.

For Ayako Bando, light becomes a symbol of the enduring soul and the quiet resilience found within humanity and nature. Through her Eternal Light series, irises, sunlight, and organic forms become reflections on hope, renewal, and the cyclical nature of life. Her layered compositions, incorporating hand-torn washi paper and fragments of earlier works, speak to the evolving nature of memory and the relationship between past and present.

Helena Rye approaches painting through intuition and meditation, allowing ethereal florals, butterflies, and angelic figures to emerge as symbolic expressions of spiritual transformation and inner awakening. Her dreamlike compositions create moments of stillness, inviting viewers to pause and reconnect with the quiet wisdom within.

Together, Bando and Rye create a contemplative dialogue in which nature becomes a language for experiences that are often felt before they are understood. Light, flowers, butterflies, and organic forms become symbols of hope, resilience, transformation, and inner discovery, revealing the connections between the external world and our inner lives.

Featured Artist: Herry Koo Herry

We are delighted to introduce [Herry Koo], featured in Sfumato Art Magazine – Issue 03.

Bio:
Herry Koo is a multimedia artist who grew up in Java and Bali and is currently based in New York City. He began his studies at the School of Visual Arts in 2008, initially focusing on graphic design before transitioning into motion graphics. After earning his BFA, he worked in a broadcast studio and later as a freelance designer. Today, he works as a graphic designer within the e-commerce field while also managing the demands of running a small business. Alongside his professional career, Koo has returned to a deeply personal art practice that reconnects him with his early creative experiences. Art has long served as a source of comfort and guidance in Koo’s life. As a child, he created drawings and ornamental crafts for enjoyment, gifts, and income, imagining art as a protective, almost guardian-like presence during challenging times. Although he stepped away from this form of making for a period, his recent return to it feels like a full-circle moment—an intuitive reconnection with something foundational to his identity. His current work draws from indigenous patterns rooted in his upbringing, using them as a way to reflect on heritage and cultural memory. These traditionally flat motifs are layered with contrasting bluish textures, creating depth and visual complexity. Within these compositions, Koo introduces characters and symbols inspired by everyday life and the stories of others, blending personal narrative with broader cultural references.

Congratulations to Herry Koo on being part of this international edition celebrating diverse contemporary artistic voices.

BETWEEN STILLNESS AND STORM | A Duet Exhibition featuring Alison McNeill & Rick Sullivan Rick Sullivan Ali McNeill

Rick Sullivan is an Abstract Expressionist artist based in Oak Park, Illinois. Originally from a small town in northern Iowa, Sullivan moved to Chicago after graduating from Drake University. Although his passion for art began in childhood, his calling to paint emerged later in life, beginning in 2018 as a way of processing the complex emotions surrounding his experience caring for a parent with Alz- heimer’s disease. Working primarily with acrylic, latex, oil pastels, and mixed media, Sullivan draws inspiration from the expressive approaches of artists such as Willem de Kooning, Wassily Kandinsky, and Jackson Po***ck while continuing to develop his own visual language. His work explores emotional rupture, transformation, instability, and the shifting space between dissolution and emergence. Sullivan’s work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions across Illinois, Wisconsin, Kansas, and Missouri, including exhibitions at Oak Park Public Library, Oak Park Gallery, Gallery 218, Bridgeport Art Center, and Sage Gallery. His work has received numerous juried honors, including Best in Show, First Place, and multiple Ribbon Winner awards in 2025.
