Two years and one day ago, ABC No Rio volunteers gathered in our empty lot under the baking sun to break ground on the next chapter of 156 Rivington. Today, what was once a dusty, rubble-filled lot is now a nearly completed four-story building!
As it stands now, we're now just six weeks away from construction being complete on the new ABC No Rio!!
For almost a decade, we've existed without a permanent home, organizing in galleries, community centers, bars, parks, bookstores, former squats, current squats, and wherever we could gather. Soon, we'll finally have a place of our own again.
When we reopen, ABC No Rio will once again be home to exhibitions, punk matinees, performances, workshops, organizing, community printmaking, the darkroom, our zine library, computer and digital media lab, communal kitchen, and countless projects that haven't yet come through our doors or haven't even been imagined.
We're in this position because of you. Together we've cleared an $800,000 debt to the City, raised over $2.5 million for the project, expanded the scope of the building, secured major grants, and kept ABC No Rio alive through nearly a decade in exile.
The work isn't done yet. We're looking to raise another $250,000 to complete Phase 2 construction and furnish and equip the building. If you have the means to, please do (link is in linktree bio)
Two years ago we picked up ceremonial shovels and dug dirt. Soon we'll be carrying in boxes of zines, print presses, enlargers, computers, PAs, ovens, artwork, tables, chairs, and everything else we'll need to bring ABC No Rio to life.
Thank you for all your support.
Love and solidarity
