CONCEPT:
Work in various media from Abstraction to Abstracted, Conceptual Representation that addresses what constitutes our being, the essence of what makes us human, and our attempts to make sense of and befriend what lies beyond.

THE UNKNOWN as both a concept and an entity that we might covet, explore, fear, dream of, obsess over, seek or otherwise engage with. It is both a promise and a limitation, and can be a curse, an obstacle, or a revelation.

It manifests itself in many ways, and often is not manifest at all. It engages us biologically, emotionally, psychologically, spiritually, socially, or in any other way that is considered human. (..)

MEDIUMS:
Process work in all media, painting, photography, sculpture, and works on paper, mixed media, multimedia, organic works, Earth works, recycled and upcycled work, assemblage and collage, video (if integratable and small scale), and sound work (if integrated in a contained multimedia work, or sound work with otherwise visual elements that can relate to a visual environment)

WHAT: From Abstraction to Abstracted and Conceptual Representation.

Plato | Book VII of The Republic

With Barbara Bachner, Gretl Bauer, Carol Boram-Hays, Augustus Goertz, Leah Oates and Gerald Wolfe.

Concept and Curation Priska Juschka

Exhibition Dates:
May 28 - June 25, 2026 (Extended)

From the Press Release:
ALLEGORY OF THE CAVE, inspired by the legendary allegory by Ancient Greek Philosopher and Theoretician, Plato (approximately 428- 348 BC) in his book The Republic.

The exhibition brings together artists whose work reaches, both conceptually and visually, beyond an outwardly direct message into the realm of ideas, philosophy, and imagination.
It investigates the idea of reality and the actuality and apparent truthfulness of the depicted, questioning whether all that we experience might be merely a constructed reality— created by ourselves.

The artists in this exhibition work with multi-layered content, embedded symbolism, visual thought process, and relatability to humanistic ideas, philosophy, and theory in abstraction and abstract representation.

EXHIBITION WALK THRU & CLOSING RECEPTION: SATURDAY, APRIL 25 | 5-7 pm

Press Release:

Lichtundfire is pleased to announce and welcome all to an Curatorial Exhibition Walk Thru and Closing Reception for PAREIDOLIA, an exhibition in various media that addresses the natural human tendency to perceive and ascribe an unambiguous interpretation and meaning to a specific image, often with a random or ambiguous pattern. (..)
A word of ancient Greek origin that connotes “instead, behind or beside an image”, Pareidolia stands for a general psychological condition of identifying so-called secondary images that are unintentional and without direct reference to existing, actual organic or inorganic patterns, objects, or organisms.

Furthermore, Pareidolia is a mental condition, however not a mental illness, whereby the person obsesses with imagery he or she sees, and even the sound he or she hears (Audio or Auditory Pareidolia), finding clues and messages in what is otherwise abstract and generally undecipherable.

In other words, in the Visual Arts, often when experiencing abstraction, we seek to find forms resembling familiar shapes, noticeable or interpretable figuration, or an imaginary horizon line that connotes a land or seascape, etc. Commonly known in the Rorschach test technique, the viewer finds imagery that is relatable and specifically personal, often sourced from memory or direct individual experience. (..)

CONCEPT:
The exhibition brings into focus the various environments that constitute a home for plants, animals, humans, and other organisms, both on the planet Earth and beyond.

It addresses the abundant habitats that coexist in accordance with a multitude of species, from microscopic to extraordinarily large, and across time, encompassing a species range from microbes to prehistoric animals and plants.

The exhibition looks at what constitutes symbiotic relationships (between different species) as well as intraspecific relationships (within a particular species), and shows the various relationships to one another.

Humans, as a species, create many distinct habitats, from rural to inner-city, and are organized culturally and socially both vertically (hierarchical systems) and horizontally (lateral systems).

The exhibition explores the many different habitats on Earth and, ultimately, extending into Space. It seeks to bring forth, both visually and conceptually, the countless possibilities and obstacles that lie within the constraints of these specific environments—with the intention of a deeper understanding of what defines us and all beings.

MEDIUMS:
Process work in all media, Earth work, plant-based work, organic materials and substances, painting, photography, sculpture, and works on paper, mixed media, multimedia, recycled and upcycled work, assemblage and collage, video and sound work if integrable.

WHAT: From Abstraction to Abstracted and Conceptual Representation.
