Forms of the Bison: Storytelling Through Clay
with Exhibiting Artist Cameron Decker
June 6 · 11:00 AM–12:30 PM

Join exhibiting artist Cameron Decker for a free, multiage clay workshop inspired by the bison skull forms featured in his museum exhibition, Q̓ʷeyq̓ʷay 'Buffalo' is Our Good Medicine'. Participants will learn how to create their own small bison skull using a mold developed by the artist, while Cameron shares the cultural, historical, and artistic significance of the bison and its enduring presence in this region. This workshop offers a meaningful opportunity for the community to spend time with the artist, engage more deeply with the work, and connect with clay as a material for holding story, memory, and place. All materials are provided, and no prior experience is necessary.

Join us for Third Thursday on May 21, 5–7 PM, as we kick off Art Park season with artist Jacob Riddle and his new exhibition, How to Grow a Hammer.

This project is unlike anything we’ve shown before—living willow trees grow through hand‑forged tool heads made from salvaged Tesla parts, slowly becoming the handles for the tools themselves. It’s a smart, surprising mix of nature, craft, and imagination.

At 5:30 PM, Jacob will talk about how the work came together and what inspires him. We’ll also have live music from Travis Yost, pizza from Clove Cart Pizza, and plenty of time to enjoy art outdoors with friends and community.

While you’re here, catch the other exhibitions on view, including:
✨ Sara Siestreem: Acts of Love, Refusal, and Resistance
✨ Kevin Bell: Western (re)Visions
✨ Aspen & Cameron Decker: Q̓ʷeyq̓ʷay 'Buffalo' is Our Good Medicine
✨ *Land and the Cosmic: Works from the MAM Collection

FREE Saturday Multi-Age Workshop
Push it, Layer it, Disrupt it! Paint & Experiment with exhibiting artist Kevin Bell
May 16th, 11–12:30 PM

Join exhibiting artist Kevin Bell for a lively, multi-age workshop rooted in experimentation. Inspired by ideas in his MAM exhibition, Kevin Bell: Western (re)Visions — movement, contrast, and the tension between control and unpredictability — this workshop focuses on collaborative process rather than product. After a brief guided visit, participants will work in small groups on large sheets of paper (18 x 36 inches), using quick sketches and bold paint gestures to explore how an image shifts when it’s pushed, pulled, layered, and disrupted. These are playful, collaborative experiments in movement and mark-making, focused on exploration and discovery rather than creating a finished artwork to take home. This is hands-on and happily messy, so please wear clothes you don’t mind getting paint on! This workshop will involve the use of water-soluble house paint for instructional and art-making purposes. All materials included.

Our June 22–26 MAM + Wheels on the Bus Full‑Day Art Camp is now open to ages 10–15!

This full‑day art camp combines MAM’s Identity in Motion sculpture workshop with Clay Creators ceramics studio for an exciting mix of hands‑on artmaking. Campers ages 10–15 will spend the morning building and experimenting with sculptural materials, then continue the creativity in the afternoon with wheel throwing, hand‑building, and glazing in the mobile ceramics studio. REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!

High school artists and future leaders — this summer is for YOU.

The Missoula Art Museum is now accepting applications for the Summer 2026 TAP Arts & Leadership Program, a free, immersive opportunity to create art, build leadership skills, and make a real impact in the community.

This summer, teens will collaborate with Resident Artist Kelly Bouma and mentor Janaina Vieira-Marques on a dynamic storytelling project centered around one big question: “Do you know our neighbors?”
Using photography, poetry, sound, and video, participants will explore identity, connection, and belonging — working together to create a powerful public artwork that reflects the voices and experiences of Missoula’s youth.

This leadership‑focused program encourages:
✨ Creativity
✨ Collaboration
✨ Critical thinking
✨ Community connection
✨ Real‑world artmaking

If you’re a teen ready to grow — or a parent looking for a meaningful, inspiring summer program — we’d love to have you join us.

📅 Program Dates: June 16 – August 6, 2026
