Museum of Mountain Flying & Fishing Camp Day Five Recap: EAA Young Eagles Flights ✈️

What a perfect way to end an incredible week of aviation, engineering, and outdoor adventures! Campers arrived at the airport with excitement and a little bit of nervous anticipation as they prepared for their EAA Young Eagles flights.

After a week of learning about aircraft, building projects, exploring aviation careers, tying flies, casting on the river, and discovering the science behind flight, students finally got to experience the magic of taking to the skies. Each camper climbed into the cockpit, buckled in, put on a headset, and enjoyed the view of the beautiful Montana landscape from above.

A huge thank you to the EAA volunteer pilots, Bryan Douglass and Cal Geyman and Ray Aten, Ralph James who donated their time, aircraft, and passion for aviation to give our campers this unforgettable experience. The Young Eagles program has introduced millions of young people ages 8–17 to aviation through free introductory flights provided by volunteer pilots.

Museum of Mountain Flying and Fishing Camp — Day 3 Recap 🎣

Campers and parents arrived at the beautiful Blackfoot River mid-morning for a day dedicated to fly fishing, adventure, and making memories. Students assembled their fly rods, added indicators, tied on their very own homemade flies, and stepped into the river ready for the experience ahead.

For some campers, the day was about practicing their casting skills. For others, it was the excitement of landing a rainbow trout. But for everyone, it was about unplugging, enjoying the beauty of the Blackfoot River, and creating their own unforgettable fishing stories.

A special thank you to Leigh Kelley for welcoming us to Paws Up, Wiley Kelley for sharing his expertise and assisting with fly tying and casting, Diann Stewart and Moose Petersen for capturing the day through photos, and all of the parents who helped with transportation and made this adventure possible.

Museum of Mountain Flying & Fishing Camp — Day One Recap ✈️🎣

What an exciting first day at camp! The adventure began with a Museum Scavenger Hunt, where campers explored the history and treasures of the Museum of Mountain Flying. Young explorers searched for airplanes, famous pilots, smokejumper gear, and even had the unforgettable opportunity to climb aboard the legendary Miss Montana DC-3.

A special thank you to Laurie Lane for sharing her expertise and helping campers learn about native Montana fish, connecting the science of rivers and wildlife with our aviation and outdoor adventure theme.

The day wrapped up with creativity and craftsmanship as campers painted wooden fish inspired by beautiful rainbow trout and created watercolor artwork capturing their outdoor experiences.

Day One was filled with discovery, history, science, art, and plenty of smiles. We can’t wait to see what adventures the rest of camp brings! ✈️🐟🎨

Commemorative Air Force has arrived with their B-25, Maid in the Shade, available for viewing and flights at the Museum this week! The B-17 will not be coming as previously advertised due to issues found during annual maintenance.

Did you know that our very first flight landed around 12:15 PM on March 9, 1941? That means we've been serving our community for 84 amazing years! Thank you for being along for the ride. Here's to many more years ahead! 🥳

Retired backcountry CFI extraordinaire Jeanne MacPherson and Kristi Dunks, Deputy Director for Regional Ops NTSB. Kristi is an aircraft owner, CFI and aviation mechanic. They are at the Montana Aviation Conference in Missoula and that's the DC-3 that once belonged to Johnson Flying Service, now dubbed "Miss Montana," behind them.

Happy New Year from the Museum of Mountain Flying. We had a wonderful crazy busy year and have a lot to be thankful for. We would like to celebrate our appreciation for your continued and valued support in Missoula, Friday January, 24th at 5pm at the downtown Berkshire Hathaway offices, where we will have appetizers and beverages and hold our annual end of year meeting of the members.

There are many exciting things happening this month and we had an extremely busy December with the Holidays, Red Sleighs event and conflicts of schedules the decision was made by the board to hold this year end event in the month of January so all could attend.

Our most exciting announcement is we are currently in Brownsville, Texas working on the newest aircraft acquisition for the Musuem. A 1944, Douglass A-26 invader used as a fire bomber and highlighted in the movie Always, Filmed in Libby Montana and operated by the Lynch family in Billings. This is an iconic Montana aircraft that through one amazing individual donation we have been able to acquire the majority of funding to purchase the aircraft.

A maintenance team has volunteered to come to Texas and work on making the aircraft airworthy through the New Year and ready for flying to Montana. Hopefully all goes well! We have an anticipated date to bring it back home in April.

We will send more out about the aircraft and it’s history in the upcoming Musuem newsletter the Backcountry Flyer.
