Ha zi mein, or dried shrimp roe noodles, is a beloved Cantonese household staple and part of Hong Kong’s intangible cultural heritage. But as mass-produced versions become increasingly common, the traditional craft behind these noodles is becoming rare.

This year, Hong Kong’s Wing Lok Noodle Factory celebrates its 50th anniversary. From preserving the time-honoured art of making ha zi mein to developing creative new flavours such as black truffle, curry seafood and Sichuan spicy beef, the family-run business is bringing new life to a treasured Hong Kong tradition.

Under second-generation owner Angus Chan, Wing Lok has grown from a little-known supplier into a homegrown brand with stockists in markets around the world, including the United States—bringing Hong Kong flavours and a comforting taste of home to noodle lovers everywhere.

On August 28, the Forum for World Education (FWE) hosted a Welcome Home Reception honoring Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs and Dr. Sonia Sachs to celebrate their completion of the Marco Polo Drive of Peace, Culture and Sustainable Development, a remarkable 43-day, 15,000-kilometre journey across 11 countries from Rome to Hong Kong.

Speaking at the reception, Director of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York, Ms Maisie Ho, highlighted Hong Kong’s growing ties with Central Asia and its role in facilitating connectivity and cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. With the city's unrivaled strength in connectivity and openness to the world, Hong Kong is well positioned as a platform connecting markets and creating new opportunities in areas such as trade, logistics, fintech and sustainable development. She also noted that Hong Kong, as the final designation of the Marco Polo Drive and the beginning of the maritime Silk Road, served as a timely reminder that journeys are not merely about reaching destinations, but also about making connections, exchanging ideas and unlocking new possibilities.

For the first 7 months of 2026, the provisional estimate of the total retail sales increased by 6.6% in volume compared with the same period in 2025.
Looking ahead, continued economic expansion, rising household incomes, and stable labour market conditions should bolster consumer sentiment. A series of upcoming mega-events is also expected to sustain growth in visitor arrivals, providing further support to retail businesses.
