Two climbers were arrested today after scaling the 1,454 foot spire of the Empire State Building, unfurling a banner reading, "When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace," before one proposed to the other hundreds of feet above Manhattan. Police closed surrounding streets as the pair descended, and they were arrested after descending safely. Authorities have yet to explain how they accessed one of New York's most heavily secured landmarks.
Whether remembered as protest, performance art, reckless spectacle, or an elaborate engagement story, the stunt appears to have no corporate ties at this time.
Banksy has long explored this same idea. From Venice's Migrant Child emerging with the tides to unauthorized installations in museums and interventions across public spaces, his work asks who has the right to interrupt the everyday experience of a city, and when disruption itself becomes the artwork.
What do you think about the stunt? 🤔
