Hicksville Gregory Museum

Hicksville Gregory Museum Earth Science & Local History Museum
The Hicksville Gregory Museum evolved from the collections of local school administrator, Dr. Gardiner E. Gregory. Fascinated by butterflies and moths, he had amassed thousands of specimens. When a changing science curriculum emphasized the study of rocks and minerals, he developed another passion. Granted a temporary charter for the museum in 1963, he and his wife Anne opened their Cottage Boulevard home to schoolchildren from Hicksville and surrounding communities. The Gregory moved to its permanent home, the Heitz Place Courthouse, in 1973 after three years of extensive renovation of the building by hundreds of volunteers.

We have been monitoring how our health professionals as well as the federal and local governments are handling the Novel Corona-virus (COVID-19) outbreak.

The Hicksville Gregory Museum will be closed starting, Sunday, March 15th.

The closure is effective immediately and is temporary until further notice. The scope and duration will be closely aligned with existing local, state and federal guidance.

The CDC has recommended that individuals avoid crowds and stay home as much as possible. Therefore, we have also decided in the interest of further helping our community decrease the spread of the virus to postpone our tours scheduled for March 17 and April 19. Postponed till further notice, our annual Science Fair scheduled for Saturday, May 2.

Please be safe and take care of yourselves and our community.

Noteworthy meeting coming up next week about Hicksville's Downtown Street Project. The area includes the Gregory Museum. Perhaps they will mention safe way for people to get from the train station/bus depot to the Gregory Museum. Not sure Google realizes that people are directed to walk thought the HFD parking lot. Doesn't seem like a safe route.
Stop by the meeting and voice your opinions.

tbt, Here we have a postcard depicting the Museum when it was still the Town Hall, circa 1905. The local Pharmacist had several local places of interest within Hicksville photographed and had them made into postcards, which he sold in his store. This particular postcard has a cancellation date from 1909. Addressed to Miss Lulu Rowehl Hicksville L.I., it reads: When you come down to the Village I would like to see you. I wish you would call around. ~Martha. The exterior of the building remains the same as it did back then. Minus the circa 1925 extension that was added to the right side, it housed the new office for the Judge and an extra room for the Constable and his growing family on the 2nd floor. Note the wash-line to the right rear.
