Sometimes we can’t see them, but they are on, in, and around us. Microbes have us outnumbered, but scientists are only beginning to understand how diverse microbes are. We will take a look into the diverse microbial world, from toxin-killing bacteria to zombie fungus that takes over ants, and learn more about their strange adaptations.

Join us for a Virtual Lab: Microbe Mania! Two sessions available: Wednesday, April 28, 4-5pm EDT and Saturday, May 1, 10-11am EDT.

This session is appropriate for ages 12-16. Register: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/virtual-lab-microbe-mania-age-12-16-tickets-146832262249?aff=ebdsoporgprofile

We’re excited to join Earth Day Initiative and March for Science New York City for the Earth Day 2021 Virtual Festival! Meet scientists, activists, and organizations in a virtual space that looks exactly like a ‘90s video game, and find out how you can get involved in the climate movement.

On Monday we’ll have a booth on “science island” from 12-7pm ET where our staff will be sharing information about how species ranges are shifting, and how we can use DNA Barcoding to identify these shifts! You can find us by searching the participants for “DNA Learning Center”, click on one of our staff names, and hit “follow” - you’ll be taken right to our booth! Or just head over to science islands and you’ll see us.

Choose a research topic you're actually interested in!

This advice was given by previous DNA barcoding student research teams, and we agree! Research takes a long time, and it will be much more fun if you're spending that time doing something you're interested in.

What other advice do you have for students who are starting spring or summer research projects?

Forest loss, degradation and, fragmentation accelerate climate breakdown and biodiversity loss. This threatens global food and water security and it imperils the safety and the livelihoods of millions of people.

World Wildlife Day is being celebrated in 2021 with the theme "Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet", as a way to highlight the central role of forests, forest species, and ecosystems in sustaining the livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people globally, and particularly of Indigenous and local communities with historic ties to forested and forest-adjacent areas.

We 💙 biodiversity!

DNA first formed on Earth billions of years ago, and all life on Earth since has been constantly evolving to keep up with the ever-changing planet. What are some of the forces driving these changes? Join us to explore evolution by natural selection and learn how organisms evolved and survived! In this activity, you will:

🧬demonstrate how natural selection and different selective pressures can drive evolution
🧬"become" a predator to understand the role of prey selection in evolution
🧬discuss theories about the evolution of the human branch of the "tree of life."

We are planning a full schedule of In-Person Camps at DNALC locations in Cold Spring Harbor and Brooklyn this summer beginning June 28, 2021. We also continue to offer Virtual Camps so you can join us from anywhere!

Virtual options include Live Virtual camps and self-paced On-Demand camps that can be completed on your schedule.

We'll post more about camps in the coming weeks, but you can also learn more about each of our camps at summercamps.dnalc.org.
Questions? Leave them in the comments and we'll get back to you ASAP!

Note: We are closely following CDC recommendations about COVID-19. This may mean the necessity to cancel camps. If camps are canceled due to these recommendations, you will receive a full refund as expeditiously as possible.

We are excited to welcome small numbers of students back into the DNA Learning Center in Cold Spring Harbor! One of our safety measures is limiting the number of students in the lab, but we are happy to have students back for the first time since last March.

This group of students is taking our Green Genes camp on Saturdays. In this camp, students clone and express the green fluorescent protein (GFP) gene. Their final goal is to extract and purify this jellyfish protein from genetically engineered bacteria! (Maybe we'll have a future fluorescent Friday post featuring their results... 🤔)

If you live far away from the DNALC or aren't ready to return to in-person programs yet, we also have options for you! "Meet a Scientist" webinars, Virtual Saturday & Wednesday DNA sessions, Virtual Field Trips, and Virtual On-demand camps are all still happening. Visit dnalc.cshl.edu for more details, or leave your questions in the comments!

Preparing students and families to thrive in the gene age.

In 1988, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory established the DNA Learning Center (DNALC) as the world's first science center devoted entirely to public genetics education. Founder and executive director David Micklos anticipated that there would be huge gaps in science curricula taught at even the finest schools and conceived a program that would better prepare students in 5th through 12th grades and their families to thrive in the gene age.

The DNALC is the largest provider of biotechnology instruction at the precollege level in the United States, operating teaching laboratories in Cold Spring Harbor, Manhattan, and Brooklyn, with two additional labs recently opened in Sleepy Hollow. Each year 30,000 precollege students conduct hands-on experiments at a DNALC or receive intensive lab instruction from DNALC staff at their schools. More than 21,000 middle and high school students have attended our week-long summer camps.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the DNALC is providing online education through Virtual Lab Field Trips and DNALC Live. DNALC live is a series of free videos, including science experiments you can do at home, and demonstrations of our most popular lab experiments!

Great implementation of DNA barcoding yesterday at Austin Community College Biotech Program. They did all of the experiments that we teach students in high school and college in the context of biotech skills and procedures. Great to see online instruction paired with authentic research and biotech career skills training! Part of our collaboration through InnovATEBIO, the national center for biotechnology education.
