We’ve got World Cup fever, so we are revisiting a chapter of sporting history that often gets left out of the story: East German football!!

Over on the Wende blog, Collections Intern José Rodriguez Cortez traces the development of East German football, from the sport's early roots in the East to the collapse of the Oberliga after the Berlin Wall came down. Along the way: Stasi chief Erich Mielke reshaping clubs by force, Dynamo Dresden's double-winning glory, and East Germany's famous victory over West Germany at the 1974 World Cup.

SOLD OUT: Monday's Cinema Under Pressure screening of The Battle of Algiers (complimentary reception at 6 p.m, film at 6:30) has reached capacity. But do not despair: because we typically see a high drop-off from free RSVPs, we will be running a standby line day-of! As usual, we will not turn anyone away as long as there is an empty seat in the house.

Gillo Pontecorvo's 1966 masterpiece, banned in France for years, remains one of the most urgent films ever made about resistance, terror, and state violence.

Following the screening, Sohail Daulatzai, a UC Irvine professor who studies media, race, and decolonization, and who literally wrote the book on this movie, joins series curator Aidan Victor for a conversation on the film's legacy and lasting relevance.

Plus: Village Well will be on site with copies of Daulatzai's Fifty Years of The Battle of Algiers: Past as Prologue.

This weekend we are hosting Q***ring the Archive, a three-part community-led workshop series exploring the q***r past through hands-on creative practice drawing from the Wende's collections. Each session stands on its own, so you can attend one, two, or all three.

Friday, June 12: Mapping Q***r Pasts & Presents. Explore maps that reveal and reimagine q***r histories.

Saturday, June 13: Alternative Q***r Poetics. Turn to poetry to engage with the gaps and silences in the record.

Sunday, June 14: Cut Copy Q***r Paste. Cut, layer, and reinterpret narratives through collage.

Next Friday, May 29, is the return of Digitization Day! Bring your photographs, letters, slides, scrapbooks, and family ephemera to the museum, and digitize them for free between 12:30 and 3:30 p.m.

Reserve a timeslot in advance, or simply walk in! Staff will be on hand to guide you through the scanners and our oversized camera. Just remember to bring a portable USB-A or USB-C storage device, such as a thumb drive or external hard drive, to take your scans home!

Please give yourself extra time to find parking, as our parking lot will be closed this day.

Family Day is tomorrow, Saturday, May 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. at The Wende Museum.
Join us for a hands-on workshop with Ellerali and Second Life Studio, where you will turn donated T-shirts into reusable tote bags. No sewing required. Clothing is generously donated by The Salvation Army Southern California.

This beginner-friendly activity is a creative way to learn about sustainability, reduce textile waste, and make something practical to take home. No experience needed. Adult supervision is required for children age 10 and younger. Participants may arrive anytime during the workshop period.

The Wende Museum gets visitors from all over, but few arrive quite like this! These friends from the former East Germany shipped two vintage East German Trabants to Chicago, drove the length of Route 66, and pulled up at our door. Thanks for visiting!
