Fresh art on view means there’s always something new to discover at the Asheville Art Museum!

Did you know that prints, photographs, and works on paper require special care? Because these materials can be especially sensitive to light exposure, they spend less time on display and more time “resting” to help preserve them for generations to come.

Rotating works also gives us the opportunity to showcase new acquisitions and bring rarely seen pieces out of storage, including a new painting by Gifford Beal, recently acquired through donation by Collector's Circle members Joey Gigliotti and Steve Gigliotti

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Francis Ehrlich “Frank” Thomson III, a beloved curator, arts leader, and longtime champion of the creative community.

Frank served as curator of the Asheville Art Museum for approximately 25 years, playing an important role in organizing exhibitions, expanding the Museum and its collections, and supporting artists and community collaborations. His leadership helped guide the Museum from its early home in the basement of Thomas Wolfe Auditorium to Pack Place and through a period of continued growth.

Frank’s legacy extends throughout Western North Carolina and beyond, including his work with the Wilkes Art Gallery, Upstairs ArtSpace, the Historic Resources Commission of Asheville and Buncombe County, and the annual NC Mountain State Fair Art Contest.

We are grateful for Frank’s dedication, vision, and lasting contributions to the arts. His impact on the Asheville Art Museum and our community will not be forgotten.
