The Last Hummingbird
48 x 36 x 3 acrylic on wood panel.

We feed the hummingbirds like it’s a religion. When hummingbirds begin their solitary migration to the tropics in fall, males leave first. They’re followed by the females and young, who stall in the interest of continued growth and making the most of familiar territory. Last year, the males had already left as Hurricane Helene approached. I was ready with homemade nectar to support the remaining hummers after the storm. We live on the Rocky Broad River in Bat Cave; instead, we had to evacuate. Our home narrowly missed total destruction and the landscape was ravaged, forever changed. We weren’t able to return for many weeks so will never know if your little hummers survived. When we did return, we had to hike in and wade through the river to do it. We didn’t live in our home again for nine months. This year, seeing the last hummingbird feed on the nectar we provided and then one day disappear had such a sweetness to it.

Wade and I have been driving back and forth from Asheville to Bat Cave on 74a for years now. That beautiful curved road through the gorge offers some of the most humbling scenery. One of my favorite views is of the sunrises and sunsets through the trees. This is based on the view outside our bedroom window. It’s what my eyes open to many days.
I did two paintings last year, similar in color to these, with the sunrise orange background. Today it’s raining and this view has a misty white with a touch of gray background. I feel another painting brewing.
Truth Will Shine
Three 60 x 30 x 3 acrylic on wood panel works
Total dimensions with spacing 60 x 94 x 3
In the darkest hour of despair,
We know the sun is waiting there.
Though winter chills us to the bone,
The seeds of spring are being sown.
When the world feels hurt and grey,
And shadows mask the coming day,
The light will break; the sun will climb,
And just in time truth will shine

Klimt in the Blue Ridge (Life in Full Bloom)
36” x 36”
acrylic on wood panel
Klimt in the Blue Ridge (Life in Full Bloom) draws inspiration from the landscape paintings of
Gustav Klimt and from my own experience wandering through the abundant, biodiverse forests
of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Walking these trails and meadows, especially in the
fullness of summer, you encounter the exuberance of life at every turn: countless shades of
green, sudden bursts of color, and the steady, calming presence of the layered blue mountains
in the distance. This painting is a celebration of that richness, capturing the vitality and
reassurance found in a landscape alive with growth.
