Whip it!🎹⚡

Released 46 years ago today, Devo’s song “Whip It" from their album “Freedom of Choice” took full advantage of the Minimoog’s ability to push sonic boundaries. “Whip It” didn’t just become a hit; it launched DEVO into the mainstream, turning their quirky, experimental style into a defining moment of early ’80s pop culture.

Bob Moog’s connection to Asheville.💙⚡

Why is the Moogseum located in Asheville, North Carolina? Bob Moog spent the last 25 years of his life in Asheville and taught music technology at UNC Asheville from 1989 until 1993. “The students were in awe,” said former chair Wayne Kirby, UNC Asheville Music Department Chair and Professor, who hired Bob. “It was like being taught by Thomas Edison.”

His time at the university left such an impact that the Bob Moog Electronic Music Studio, located on the lower level of Lipinsky Hall, was dedicated in December 2009.

The Voice of R2D2, May the 4th Be With You 🎹⚡

In 1971, Alan R. Pearlman decided to build a more portable synthesizer than the previous 2500 model, with a fixed set of functions, for the education market. He worked with engineer Dennis Colin and devised a semimodular scheme in which patch cords could override internally wired preset connections, the ARP 2600.

The instrument gained popularity among musicians and sound designers alike. In 1977, audiences first heard the voice of R2-D2 when Star Wars, later retitled “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope”, premiered in theaters. Sound designer Ben Burtt famously used an ARP 2600 synthesizer to create the R2’s iconic voice.

You can explore an array of 34 different historically significant synthesizers, including the ARP 2600, at the Moogseum.
