West End Girls 🎶🎹

Rereleased in October of 1985, 41 years ago this month, "West End Girls" was the number one hit from Pet Shop Boys’ album "Please". The bass sound throughout the track comes from a Minimoog.

According to the duo, they chose the album title so people could go into a record shop and say, "Can I have the Pet Shop Boys album, 'Please?'"

At the Moogseum, you can explore a variety of interactive exhibits, starting with the Bob Moog Timeline, which features over 700 pieces of archival material and a listenable list of over 100 songs featuring various Moog synthesizers from the 1960s through the 2020s.

🎤From the Source puts your questions at the center of the conversation. The inaugural guest is Dave Rossum, co-founder of E-MU Systems and Rossum Electro-Music, an influential figure in more than five decades of synthesizer, sampling, and music technology history. Dave also made the Patching Sound exhibit at the Moogseum possible.

🎶⚡Voltage-Controlled Electronic Music Modules⚡🎶

In October of 1964, 62 years ago this month, Bob Moog’s article on Voltage-Controlled Modules was presented at the Audio Engineering Society’s annual meeting. Bob states early in the article:
“Electronic music, as the term is understood to mean at the present time, is the class of musical compositions either created solely by electronic means, or utilizing sounds which have been heavily processed electronically…The wide variety of sounds which can be readily produced electronically but are impossible to produce through conventional musical instruments offer the composer an enormous variety of new musical effects and elements of composition. In addition, the composer is able to arrange the sounds exactly as he wishes,- to "compose" the music in the most literal sense. The composer pays heavily for these added advantages. With a multiplicity of sound parameters under his control, the composer must become adept at manipulating his electronic apparatus so it will produce the desired results.”

🎹The Entertainer🎹

Released on October 11, 1974, 52 years ago today, on Billy Joel’s album "Streetlife Serenade", "The Entertainer" exemplifies Joel’s early work with the Minimoog. The Minimoog is clearly heard throughout the song between verses. The track peaked at number 34 on the US charts and was regarded by Billboard as one of the album’s best cuts.

Aurally & Visually Striking 👂👀🎹

Launched by Roland in 1981, the Jupiter-8 is lauded for its lively, versatile sound, straightforward user interface, and legendary status.

The Jupiter-8 is an 8-voice, 16-oscillator beauty with some tricks up its sleeve. It was the first truly polyphonic synth with a split keyboard. You can assign four voices to the left side and four to the right, letting you play chords with the left hand and solo with the right. You can also layer voices so that each key plays two different sounds. Unison mode stacks all 16 oscillators, and polyphonic portamento lets the Jupiter-8 glide from chord to chord.

Minimoog Through the Ages 🎹⚡🎶

The Moogseum is pleased to announce our upcoming exhibit, Minimoog Through the Ages! Join us November 12 through November 16 and enjoy examples of Minimoogs from the 1960s through 2025. JoE Silva, author of the award-winning Minimoog Book published by BJOOKS, will also be in attendance and will be available to answer questions about the various Minimoogs.

The Moogseum is offering this exhibit alongside the upcoming Minimoog Concerto. Inna Faliks is performing the "Minimoog Concerto," composed by Gabriel Prokofiev, grandson of the famed Sergei Prokofiev, with the Asheville Symphony. It is the first Minimoog concerto ever written, and this will be the second time the concerto has been performed anywhere in the world.

Precious🎹⚡

Released in October of 2005, 21 years ago this month, on Depeche Mode’s album "Playing the Angel" as the lead single, "Precious" was one of three songs written by frontman Dave Gahan, despite keyboardist Martin L Gore traditionally writing music for the band. The track features a Moog Prodigy, which Gore plays in the official music video.

Rolling Stone described the album's sound as featuring "the band's classic blend of synth-pop beats, heavy guitar riffs and dark lyrics". The album has been described as a more organic record for using mostly analog synthesizers.
