Jazz in the Garden🎷🎹⚡

On August 28, 1969, 55 years ago today, a live performance featuring four Moog modular synthesizers filled the MoMA The Museum of Modern Art's Sculpture Garden in New York City.

This live concert featured a Moog quartet composed of Herb Deutsch, Hank Jones, Artie Doolittle, and Jim Pirone. Chris Swansen was also featured with his quartet. Roughly 4,000 people attended the groundbreaking performance, now viewed as an important event in the development of electronic music.

You can learn more about the performance at the Moogseum. A reel-to-reel tape of the performance is on display as part of our Patching Sound exhibit, which provides a deep dive into modular synthesis. Tickets are available at the link in the comments.

Procession⚡🎹💜

Procession was released on Lisa Bella Donna’s album Moogmentum on August 21, 2021, five years ago this month, on the anniversary of Bob Moog’s passing. The album was released in collaboration with The Bob Moog Foundation and features Bob on the track.

Lis Bella Donna stated, “This record is a very special dedication to the life and work of Robert A. Moog…I wanted to tell a story coming from a musician who never had the privilege and pleasure to meet and speak with Bob personally. Rather, this is a story from someone who started on Moog synthesizers very young; about all of the doors it opened in my music and my perception of sound from that point onward."

You can explore more songs that feature various Moog synthesizers by taking a deep dive into the Bob Moog Timeline at the Moogseum. The exhibit features over 100 songs from 1964 through 2021. You can get your tickets at the link in the comments.

Big Briar, Inc.🎹⚡🌿

In 1978, 48 years ago, Bob Moog created a new company, Big Briar, Inc., to build custom musical instruments. The company was named after the cove where the home was located. Bob and his family had moved to Big Briar Cove after leaving Moog Music the year prior, and the home remains there, just outside of Asheville.
