You can cover a thought, but you cannot quite erase it.
In Cveto Marsič ’s works on paper, gesture moves across written words, hiding some traces and bringing others back to the surface. Layer after layer, what seemed to have disappeared remains present underneath.

The result is less a record of a single thought than of everything that came before it: memories, gestures, landscapes, sensations, constantly overlapping and changing shape.

A selection of works on paper from VINCVLVM.
On view until November 13

Meet Cveto Marsič

Born in Koper, Slovenia, in 1960, Cveto Marsič has always approached painting as more than a medium: a way of living, moving through the world and engaging with what surrounds him.
His practice has developed between painting, drawing, performance and land art, shaped by the landscapes of his childhood, the salt pans of Piran, music, movement and an enduring relationship with the land.
This connection extends beyond the studio. Marsič cultivates the land and makes w**e, working with the same elements that permeate his paintings: earth, gesture, transformation and time. Painting and w**e become two different ways of allowing matter to evolve.
For VINCVLVM, these threads come together in works where colour, writing and gesture accumulate, overlap and return to the surface.

A new season begins

We are opening the new exhibition programme with VINCVLVM, a solo exhibition by Slovenian artist Cveto Marsič , opening on 24 September

The exhibition explores the profound bond between earth, matter and time that runs through Marsič’s practice. For the artist, the earth is not a landscape to be represented, but a living material to engage with — a place of cultivation, memory and transformation.
Through layers of colour, marks and writing, his paintings become spaces of sedimentation, where gestures, experiences and memories overlap, disappear and resurface

(b. 1973, Vancouver, Canada) lives and works in Paris.

Working across painting, drawing and photography, Mathew McWilliams investigates how images are constructed, translated and perceived. His practice unfolds through carefully calibrated processes in which materials, surfaces and reproductive techniques become active agents in the making of the work.

For Senza titolo, McWilliams presents a diptych from the series Things As They Are. Developed through a dialogue with a seventeenth-century painting by Antiveduto Gramatica, the works emerge from a sequence of painting, photography and inkjet printing, where each canvas becomes both the origin and the reproduction of the other. Rather than questioning what an image represents, McWilliams asks how an image comes into being—and how every act of translation inevitably transforms what we see.

(b. 1984, Cagliari, Italy) is a visual researcher and photographer living and working between Île-de-France and Sardinia.

Combining photography with an architectural approach to space, Giaime Meloni investigates how places are perceived, inhabited and imagined. Rather than documenting a landscape, his work explores the cultural and symbolic layers that shape our relationship with the natural environment.

For Senza titolo, Meloni presents four photographs from the series Monte Verità, developed during his residency at Fondazione Monte Verità . The images focus on the mountain’s natural landscape, where forests, water and vegetation become carriers of memory, evoking the utopian history of the place through subtle visual correspondences

Marco Cordero (b. 1969, Roccavione, Italy) lives and works in Turin.

Books are the primary material of Cordero’s artistic practice. Carved, burned, excavated and transformed, they are stripped of their original function to become sculptural forms where language, memory and matter converge. No longer read, they are encountered as physical objects, carrying traces of stories while opening new spaces for interpretation.

For Senza titolo, Cordero presents a selection of sculptural works that continue his exploration of the book as both object and metaphor. Through acts of subtraction and transformation, familiar forms are reimagined, while language shifts from something to be read into something to be experienced. In some works, stone enters this dialogue, introducing a further tension between permanence and fragility.
