THIS SATURDAY! 💥 BEYOND THE ISLAND | 5 SEPTEMBER, FROM 2 PM

This Saturday, Cuban artists & Curators are taking over Somers Gallery for an afternoon of cinema, visual art, conversation, music and time to connect.

🎞️ Films by Carlos Alejandro Halley (Carlos Alejandro), Yary Guirado (Yary Guirado Studio) and Fernando Fraguela (Fernando Fraguela Fosado), with commentary by film curator Léo Krenzer (L É O).

🎨 A conversation on artists, movement and production across borders with Jasmine Chohan (Jasmine Kaur Chohan), Amanda Colina (Amanda Colina González), and Gabriela Román (Gabriela Román González | Art Curator, Writer & Strategist), moderated by Raquel González (Raquel González).

🍸 From 5:30 pm, stay for Cuban cocktails and nibbles, a playlist by Zanja Records (Zanja Records), Nopal snacks from Nopal, and plenty of time to keep the conversation going.

ARTISTS, MOVEMENT AND PRODUCTION ACROSS BORDERS

5 SEPTEMBER | 4:30–5:30PM

We’re thrilled to invite you to a conversation on contemporary art from Cuba and across its borders, exploring institutions and independent initiatives, the diaspora, and how artists sustain their practices across different geographies.

Joining the conversation:

Jasmine Chohan (Jasmine Kaur Chohan) is a researcher, curator and educator, currently Assistant Curator of Contemporary British Art at Tate. Her PhD at the Courtauld Institute focused on the Havana Biennial and contemporary Cuban art.

Amanda Colina González (Amanda Colina González) is an art professional working across gallery operations, artist liaison, sales, cultural programming, and communication. She currently works at Galleria Continua in Havana.

Gabriela Román González (Gabriela Román González | Art Curator, Writer & Strategist) is a curator, creative and cultural strategist working across interdisciplinary formats, exhibitions, live programmes and editorial projects. She currently serves as Head of Exhibitions and Programmes at CASA.

Moderated by Raquel González Eizmendiz (Raquel González), a London-based art professional, Communications Coordinator at Gasworks, whose independent projects and research engage with contemporary art, Latin American artists in the UK and artistic networks across borders.

The afternoon will feature El Patio, an installation of paintings by Cuban artist Ernesto Crespo (Ernesto Crespo García), currently based in Spain.

Twined Will in the Wind Is the second exhibition focused on Asian communities.

mmai is honoured to bring together five women artists of Asian diasporic backgrounds based in the UK to Somers Gallery.

Twined Will in the Wind, a group exhibition that explores how diasporic Asian women navigating complex personal and historical circumstances, reveal a tiny, tender will — gentle, yet unyielding.

Emerging from conditions marked by exhaustion, displacement, and uncertainty, these works reveal quieter forms of persistence. Through acts of making, caring, and remembering, the artists show how inherited knowledge and personal experiences can continue to evolve, creating new relationships between past and present, human and non-human life.

We are taking a break from our regular programme in August, but the gallery is hosting three exhibitions, mainly from artists and curators of Asian heritage.

We believe that the interaction between Latin American and other regions besides The US and Central Europe needs to be improved a lot so our long term vision is to connect Latin America with Asia, the Middle East East and other regions.

We believe London offers the possibility of connecting Latin American and Asian regions, so while we take a break, we are also exploring new opportunities for Latin American art beyond the West, and vice versa.

Auraland Art invites you to the exhibition, Samsara at Somers Gallery.

Derived from the ancient Sanskrit word for the continuous cycle of life, Samsara explores themes of time, transformation, memory, loss, and renewal. Within the ever-shifting rhythms of existence, every encounter, departure, and return becomes part of how we understand ourselves and the world around us.

Bringing together more than twenty artists from diverse backgrounds, the exhibition presents painting, photography, video, and mixed-media works that offer distinct perspectives on cycles, impermanence, and the passage of time.

We are deeply grateful to all the participating artists, collaborators, and our team whose dedication over the past months has made this exhibition possible.

We warmly invite you to join us at Somers Gallery, London, from 4–10 August 2026, and experience Samsara—an exhibition that reflects on the traces left by time and the ever-evolving nature of life.

When Hands Leave Traces on Gloves by Colombian artist, Natalia Mustafa opens this Friday5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Natalia works mostly with photography, print, artists books, and sculpture. Through these mediums she revisits and dissects different ordinary life objects and icons that relate to the usage of different technologies. She has a keen interest in understanding the relationship between the body and these technologies and is permanently questioning the new notions of time and space, as we become a more digital society. She is concerned about how our body is currently adapting to these technologies and how it will continue to adapt in the future. Natalia has shown her work in The Handbag Factory (London. May 2024), Safehouse 1 (London. May 2024), Southwark Park Galleries (London. February 2024). She had her first solo show at Casas Riegner Gallery (Bogotá, August 2022).
