Aileen Gavonel (Lima, Peru) is a visual artist whose practice explores the poetic and ritual dimensions of clay as a “soft weapon,” understood as a medium for listening, care, and resistance.
Through ceramics, installation, and visual poetry, she investigates the connections between material, territory, and memory, imagining more sensitive and situated forms of coexistence. Her work stems from observing everyday gestures and the materiality of handmade objects, proposing a reflection on fragility, connection, and the possibility of repair.
Guided by a tactile sensitivity and a constant search for dialogue between the symbolic and the concrete, her practice operates at the blurred boundaries between art, ritual, and ecology. In her work, clay becomes a means to think about the relationship between body and territory, between originating knowledge and contemporaneity, and between resistance and tenderness. In this intersection, Gavonel envisions a practice that affirms making as a form of thinking and creation as a space for listening and transformation.
She holds a degree in Art with a specialization in Printmaking from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Ceramics and Glass at the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London. Between 2020 and 2022, she participated in the SOMA Educational Program in Mexico City, an experience that decisively shaped the collaborative and process-oriented character of her work. She has completed residencies at FAAP (São Paulo), Goctalab (Amazonas), PAIJAAN (Trujillo), ID Pool (Portugal), and Tlaxcala Tres (Mexico City). Her work has been presented in Peru, Mexico, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Spain, the United States, Argentina, and Sweden, where she participated in the Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (GIBCA). She is currently participating in the Amazon Biennial: Verda Distancia in Belém and recently presented The Chamber of Seashells at Proyecto NASAL, Mexico City.
