New Exhibition 📣

ONE YEAR! Photographs from the Miners’ Strike 1984 – 85 explores the vital role that photography played during this bitter industrial dispute.

To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the miners’ strike, Four Corners is delighted to tour this exhibition from the . One of Britain’s longest and most violent disputes, the repercussions of the miners’ strike continue to be felt today across the country.

The exhibition looks at the central role photographs played during the year-long struggle against pit closures, with many materials drawn from the Martin Parr Foundation collection. Posters, vinyl records, plates, badges and publications are placed in dialogue with images by photographers, investigating the power and the contradictions inherent in using photography as a tool of resistance. They include photographs by Brenda Prince, John Sturrock, John Harris, Jenny Matthews, Roger Tiley, Imogen Young and Chris Killip, as well as Philip Winnard who was himself a striking miner.

Exhibition opens on 20th September!

The exhibition also launches a new book, ONE YEAR! Photographs from the Miners' strike 1984-85, published by

RECRUITING NOW!
Do you live in Tower Hamlets, and are interested in history, film or photography? We are looking for participants to explore local histories, learn new skills and make short films inspired by archive collections.

As part of our ongoing East End Stories programme, this autumn we begin two projects:

Four Corners Film Workshop:

To celebrate Four Corners’ 50th anniversary, this project looks at its early history of radical, social filmmaking practice in the 1970s and 80s. This will include a focus on films ‘Nighthawks’, ‘Bred and Born’, ‘A Kind of English’, and young people’s workshop films such as ‘Don’t Think So’ and ‘Is That It?’

The project will offer participants skills training in oral history recording, archival research, Premiere Pro edit training and the opportunity to create short films.

Workers Newsreel Project:

The Workers Film & Photo League (WFPL) was a group of radical amateur filmmakers and photographers, active in East London during the 1930s. Their films offer a unique picture of working class lives, resonating with today’s concerns of food poverty, work precarity and the cost of living crisis.

Participants will explore the history of the WFPL, and create their own Super 8mm films edited on Premiere Pro, to be exhibited at Four Corners in 2025. The project will be co-led by Sam Stevens of the Film & Photo League Archive.

Throughout our current exhibition, our incredible team of Bengali Photo Archive volunteers are sharing their insights into the collection. Here’s Tanbir Mirza-Baeg on the beauty of domestic details.

Through the many photos submitted to the Bengali Photo Archive, what stands out in the domestic photos is the wallpaper in the background. These wallpapers would usually be bright floral patterns, reflecting their own fashion style. This style of floral wallpaper is something that continues to be chosen in the home today, showing that while things have changed over many years, they still stay the same in certain ways to this day.

Viewers of the exhibition have pointed out that while the photos aren’t from their family albums, they find that they can relate to these kinds of domestic photos and feel that they recognise themselves as if the photos were taken in their homes.

Throughout our current exhibition, our incredible team of Bengali Photo Archive volunteers are sharing their insights into the collection. Here’s Tanbir Mirza-Baeg on his newfound role as family archivist:

When I joined as a volunteer at Four Corners for the Bengali Photo Archive, I wanted to initially learn about the history of the Bengali community in the Tower Hamlets area. This then led me to the decision to archive my family’s photos.

My mum lived in Tower Hamlets for 10 years of her life during the 80s and she had many albums documenting her life. After scanning and cataloguing the photos, it wasn't too long ago that I also recorded an oral history interview with her as well, where we talked about her life back then.

Taking on the role of the family archivist has given me the aim to preserve my family history by making it as tangible as possible. It’s a see-saw act of taking the physical and bringing them to a digital space, while also taking the digital and bringing them to a physical space.

As part of our current exhibition, Tanbir has also curated a display of personal items from his grandfather’s archives. You can read more about his fascinating story in an article written by Tanbir and edited by edited by Aanchal Malhotra for the Museum of Material Memory: museumofmaterialmemory.com/the-east-pakistan-motor-driving-licence/

Our Story

Four Corners believes in film and photography for all. As a registered charity, our work builds upon almost 50 years of radical, socially-engaged approaches to photography and film.

Access to the arts is not equal. We aim to change that. Our training projects enable underrepresented people to gain skills in creative media. We support artists’ development, work with local communities and engage broad audiences through our cultural programme.

Our centre in East London is a creative hub, offering darkroom, studio and film equipment hire, alongside coworking and office space.
