From Avignon to Yokohama, this new publication offers a global perspective on contemporary Korean art through 11 international exhibitions supported this year Korea Focus Support Program, an initiative of Korea Arts Management Service (KAMS).⁠

Featuring interviews, essays and think pieces by frieze editors and writers, the issue incldues: MOCA chief curator Clara Kim talks to Marko Gluhaich on connecting the global with the local in the survey of Haegue Yang; following her survey at Fire Station Doha, Cassie Packard explores the unique sculpture of Chung Seoyoung; and Chris Waywell’s guide to the exhibitions still to catch this autumn and winter, including Kang Seung Lee’s UK debut at the SLG, London.⁠

Change happens at a slower pace in Seongbuk, one of Seoul’s hilly northern neighbourhoods where old and new coexist in an increasingly rare way.

Chunghyung Lee (), founder of experimental art space This Is Not a Church (), shows us around the quiet gems of his district to
explore ancient fortress walls, Buddhist temples, the .Stone.Art.Museum, House plus contemporary art spaces and
’s residency .

As commercial galleries spring up throughout the hills, Lee says, ‘Here, things from the past and things happening now seem to blend together in a subtle way.’

‘It’s all about finding the perfect shape,’ says Minjae Kim. ‘It’s a very intuitive thing: you just know whether it’s right or wrong.’

The Seoul-born, NYC-based artist and furniture maker is part of the inaugural ‘Material Practice’ section at Frieze Seoul 2026, curated by Hyeyoung Cho and supported by LG U+. Showing with LA gallery Marta LA, Kim’s presentation will be loosely themed around the idea of a classroom, with multiple influences and possible directions, and it will also feature works on canvas by his mother, artist Myoung-Ae Lee.

Kim studied architecture, but, as he explains in this video shot at his studio in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn it was ‘missing making things with my hands’ that led him to start creating his tactile sculptural and functional pieces, initially in his basement and backyard.

‘Everything has a story, but it’s not planned,’ he says about his work. ‘It’s kind of the opposite of interior design.’

Finding inspiration in transitional spaces and moments of coming together – from Seoul’s q***r clubs to the alchemic chemistry between latex and metal – Yagwang’s new project ‘Facade Zone’ reveals fascinating ideas of identity and transformation.

‘I think that even within a single body, there are intersecting genders, sexualities and relationships. And what we want to say through our work is probably something we wanted to say to ourselves, or to those around us.’

September offers a sense of return and renewal, when summer is not quite over and autumn is yet to begin. Playing on this expectant feeling, the latest issue of frieze looks at the ways artists transform what is discarded into new works, ideas and formats.⁠

Emily LaBarge profiles Liz Larner’s practice of repurposing refuse, Kari Rittenbach investigates the obsolete technologies Nandi Loaf reformats and Ahmad Azizy follows the trail of military trash to uncover the legacies of American wars. Elsewhere, Lubna Chowdhary discusses inherited traditions in her sculptural practice, while Sasha Frere-Jones profiles cover artist JJJJJerome Ellis, whose ‘transformative gentleness’ offers a ‘calm rebuke’ to the world.⁠

In the lead up to Frieze Seoul, we asked CON_ director Hisatomo Kato and artist Minhee Kim (Minhee) to tell us how a chance discovery on Instagram grew into a cross-city collaboration between Tokyo and Seoul, and, ultimately, a ‘relationship of trust.’
 
For their presentation, Minhee brings together new paintings alongside a site-specific wall work installed directly on the booth, extending her ongoing interrogation of glitch as a way to undo and question the idealised female image.
 
Since opening in Tokyo’s east side in 2022, CON_ has built a programme around emerging artists and experimental practices. At this year’s Frieze Seoul, brings showcases the young galleries and next-generation artists shaping today’s contemporary art landscape.
 
Swipe to hear from Kato and Minhee as they discuss how they developed their solo presentation, how they first met, and what they’ve learned from each other along the way.

‘He’s like a philosopher, an artist-thinker at core,’ says Caryn Quek, gallery director at Ames Yavuz, which is presenting the work of Myanmar artist Po Po at Frieze Seoul this year.
 
Po Po’s work emerged from decades of cultural and economic isolation in Myanmar, developing largely outside the international art discourse. His work draws on Buddhist philosophy, semiotics and questions around life, death and the self, often through playful combinations of materials and forms.
 
At Frieze Seoul 2026, Po Po’s presentation in ‘Spotlight’, a new section curated by Wonseok Koh, brings together works spanning his nearly five-decade career, including newly uncovered drawings, sketches and miniature paintings from the 1980s and ’90s.
