The artist Dan Graham was a patron of Orchard throughout its three-year run. To support the programme, he donated a previously unrealised work, Project for Slide Projector from 1966 for the gallery members to produce and edition.

Using footage he shot during the making of the piece, Preiss rapidly intercut various angles to reanimate a flickering three-dimensional view of the gallery. The Quicktime ends with a black title card that simply reads: ORCHARD.

Join us on Monday 12th October 7.30pm at CLOSE UP Cinema for a special screening of Jeff Preiss's latest films, including his second collaboration with Josiah McElheny, followed by a Q&A between Preiss and Dr. Dan Kidner.

While Preiss has worked as a prolific director and cinematographer, his practice as an experimental filmmaker has also been instrumental in the crossover between art and film in New York City since the 1980s.

'Beckoning Cats'
Jeff Preiss, 2025, 12 min

A short 16mm-to-digital work made in homage to Chris Marker. The film reflects on an anonymous shrine discovered outside Light Industry – the Brooklyn-based microcinema in Brooklyn – on 26th August 2016, twenty-eight days after Marker’s death. Featuring twenty Maneki-Neko figurines, a recurring motif in Marker’s oeuvre, Preiss uses these folklore icons as a visual foundation.

'The Secret World'

An experimental portrait of New York gallerist and publisher Christine Burgin, traced through her Borgesian library of strange and visionary books by such eclectic figures as Dinshah Ghadiali, Eva Carrière, Charles Fort, Richard Shaver, and Wilhelm Reich. Seen through 16mm film, VHS tape, and 35mm slide sources – as well as the full spectrum of visible colour – 'The Secret World' invites us into a self-contained universe of mystical and crackpot imaginings.

Jeff Preiss is a New York-based filmmaker, cinematographer, and visual artist active since the 1980s. A founding member of the experimental gallery Orchard and former co-director of Films Charas, Preiss’s work spans narrative and experimental cinema, with films preserved by Anthology Film Archives and the Andy Warhol Foundation. He was Director of Photography for Bruce Weber’s ‘Let’s Get Lost’ (1989), and his 2014 feature Low Down won the Sundance Cinematography Award.
Currently on the board of Light Industry, his film ‘The Secret World’ (2023), made in collaboration with the artist Josiah McElheny, was screened at MoMA in 2024.

We open Wednesday 7th October, 6pm-9pm.

Jeff Preiss’s Orchard Documents are a series of experimental film collaborations the filmmaker made with other members of Orchard, a cooperatively run gallery that operated on New York City’s Lower East Side between 2005 and 2008. Filmed within the context of exhibitions organised by the gallery’s members, each document employs different cinematographic techniques and formats to represent artworks and exhibitions. The films do more than record an exhibition history: the Orchard Documents posit that documentation can be generative rather than purely representative.

As well as showcasing Preiss as a filmmaker, the Orchard Documents can also be seen as counterpoints to what has become an increasingly prevalent condition within contemporary art, whereby installation views that often proliferate online today typically flatten exhibitions into images. In this sense, the show offers new readings of art and exhibition histories, revealing aspects of artistic practice that typically remain unseen in conventional forms of documentation. In Preiss’s own words: ‘All documentation faces the question of whether to reveal itself as an outer layer of perspective. It is within the framework of that question where I open space for other narratives'.

A public programme of events will accompany the exhibition throughout October and November.

In the mid-2000s, American politics during George W. Bush’s second term was marked by intensifying partisan polarisation, growing public opposition to the Iraq War, and increasing concerns about the administration’s commitment to democratic principles and constitutional constraints. Formed as an act of resistance to Bush’s re-election as president, Orchard Gallery's three-year lease on an empty property (at 47 Orchard Street) in Manhattan ran up until the onset of the global financial crisis in 2008.

We are now closed for our summer break and look forward to welcoming New York-based artist and filmmaker Jeff Preiss to Cell Project Space when we reopen on Wednesday October 7th for 'Orchard Documents', a solo exhibition of works by the artist, curated by Saim Demircan.

The exhibition surveys a series of experimental film collaborations made by Preiss with other members of the cooperatively run Orchard Gallery, which operated between 2005 and 2008 on New York City’s Lower East Side.

This week is your last chance to see Armineh Negahdari's solo exhibition until 9th August.

To mark the final week and to celebrated Negahdari's attention to poetry as a counterpoint in her practice, join us this evening (Thursday 6 August, 6.30pm) for a special Poetry Translation Workshop in the gallery and garden, led by writer, translator and curator Elhum Shakerifar.

Together, we'll explore Iranian poet Parinaz Fahimi's 'Piccadilly Line', translating it collaboratively, line by line. Through grammar, rhythm, imagery and cultural context, the workshop invites participants to discover translation as a creative act, where meaning is continually negotiated, reimagined and remade.

Elhum Shakerifar is an award-winning translator, writer, BAFTA-nominated producer and curator whose work explores language, multiplicity and storytelling across cultures.

Join us next Thursday 6th August at 6.30pm for a poetry translation workshop with translator Elhum Shakerifar and the Poetry Translation Centre.

Persian and non-Persian speakers are welcome to join the session.

In this special workshop, Elhum Shakerifar will introduce participants to the work of Iranian poet Parinaz Fahimi (1981–2016), offering a deeper insight into artist Armineh Negahdari'screative practice, which is rooted in an engagement with modern and contemporary Persian poetry.

Beginning with an exploration of Persian poetry as a vessel for history, memory, and cultural continuity in modern Iranian society, Shakerifar will provide context for the enduring role of poetry in Iranian life before introducing Fahimi's work and literary practice. Fahimi's poetry explores the experiences of Iranians and the Iranian diaspora in the UK, reflecting on the ways poetry can serve as a tether to identity, language, and cultural memory.

The workshop will centre on a collaborative translation of Fahimi's poem 'Piccadilly Line', one in her first collection, ‘Poppies with Alef’ (Khashkhāshī bā Alef); published posthumously in 2016, and written towards the end of her life. Led by Elhum Shakerifar participants will be guided through the poem line by line. Shakerifar will unpack its grammar, rhythm, imagery, and cultural context, enabling the group to work together to create a vivid and nuanced English translation.

Through close reading and collaborative translation, via non native Persian, native and English speakers participants will gain a richer understanding of the resonances between poetry, migration, memory, and visual art.

The workshop offers new contexts and critical perspectives through which to experience Armineh Negahdari's exhibition, 'The Living River'. Poetry is a constant presence throughout Negahdari's creative practice, suggesting an approach in which meaning is evoked rather than fixed, remaining open to interpretation and continual transformation.

Inviting viewers into spaces where fragility and persistence coexist.

Armineh Negahdari's work transforms the ordinary into poetic language that speaks of memory, resilience, and quiet acts of imagination. Line appears like a calligraphy of sorts, where marks are shared between drawing and writing. What is left is not text but a gesture that has no connection to any meaning - that cannot be interpreted or read. Like the sediment left behind by a river it is the trace of movement. It is not the calligraphy or writing itself but what remains’ Negahdari chooses the whiteness of a blank sheet of fabric, and the infinite possibilities it holds. Whiteness being the silence which runs through landscape.
