This week is your last chance to see Armineh Negahdari's solo exhibition until 9th August.

To mark the final week and to celebrated Negahdari's attention to poetry as a counterpoint in her practice, join us this evening (Thursday 6 August, 6.30pm) for a special Poetry Translation Workshop in the gallery and garden, led by writer, translator and curator Elhum Shakerifar.

Together, we'll explore Iranian poet Parinaz Fahimi's 'Piccadilly Line', translating it collaboratively, line by line. Through grammar, rhythm, imagery and cultural context, the workshop invites participants to discover translation as a creative act, where meaning is continually negotiated, reimagined and remade.

Elhum Shakerifar is an award-winning translator, writer, BAFTA-nominated producer and curator whose work explores language, multiplicity and storytelling across cultures.

Join us next Thursday 6th August at 6.30pm for a poetry translation workshop with translator Elhum Shakerifar and the Poetry Translation Centre.

Persian and non-Persian speakers are welcome to join the session.

In this special workshop, Elhum Shakerifar will introduce participants to the work of Iranian poet Parinaz Fahimi (1981–2016), offering a deeper insight into artist Armineh Negahdari'screative practice, which is rooted in an engagement with modern and contemporary Persian poetry.

Beginning with an exploration of Persian poetry as a vessel for history, memory, and cultural continuity in modern Iranian society, Shakerifar will provide context for the enduring role of poetry in Iranian life before introducing Fahimi's work and literary practice. Fahimi's poetry explores the experiences of Iranians and the Iranian diaspora in the UK, reflecting on the ways poetry can serve as a tether to identity, language, and cultural memory.

The workshop will centre on a collaborative translation of Fahimi's poem 'Piccadilly Line', one in her first collection, ‘Poppies with Alef’ (Khashkhāshī bā Alef); published posthumously in 2016, and written towards the end of her life. Led by Elhum Shakerifar participants will be guided through the poem line by line. Shakerifar will unpack its grammar, rhythm, imagery, and cultural context, enabling the group to work together to create a vivid and nuanced English translation.

Through close reading and collaborative translation, via non native Persian, native and English speakers participants will gain a richer understanding of the resonances between poetry, migration, memory, and visual art.

The workshop offers new contexts and critical perspectives through which to experience Armineh Negahdari's exhibition, 'The Living River'. Poetry is a constant presence throughout Negahdari's creative practice, suggesting an approach in which meaning is evoked rather than fixed, remaining open to interpretation and continual transformation.

Inviting viewers into spaces where fragility and persistence coexist.

Armineh Negahdari's work transforms the ordinary into poetic language that speaks of memory, resilience, and quiet acts of imagination. Line appears like a calligraphy of sorts, where marks are shared between drawing and writing. What is left is not text but a gesture that has no connection to any meaning - that cannot be interpreted or read. Like the sediment left behind by a river it is the trace of movement. It is not the calligraphy or writing itself but what remains’ Negahdari chooses the whiteness of a blank sheet of fabric, and the infinite possibilities it holds. Whiteness being the silence which runs through landscape.

Open this week and until 9th August 'The Living River', Armineh Negahdari’s solo exhibition.

Through constant repetition, in line Negahdari's figures float, spin, and drift through uncertain space. Never fully anchored, they slip between human, botanical, and animal forms. Amidst the swirling movement and restless activity, faces quietly emerge, moments of resilience that reveal themselves only through sustained attention.

Marks spill into provisional spaces where both figures and materials retain their own histories and resistances. Across textured, unstable grounds, grainy graphite and oil disperse into fragile landscapes, inviting us into a world that is at once intimate, playful, and powerfully infectious. 'The Living River' rewards careful looking....

Cell Project Space is looking for a part-time Gallery Assistant to join our team.

Working Saturdays, with occasional and crucial additional shifts over an initial 6-month period, this role is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build a career in the contemporary arts.

We're seeking someone with a strong knowledge of contemporary art and a genuine passion for it—someone who is confident engaging visitors in conversation and helping interpret our exhibitions. Alongside front-of-house responsibilities, you'll also support exhibition installation, gallery administration, and the day-to-day running of our artist-led organisation.

Applicants should hold a degree in a relevant subject—such as Fine Art, Curating, or History of Art—and have at least one year's experience working in a professional arts environment, either paid or voluntary.

This role offers valuable experience across exhibition production, visitor engagement, communications, and gallery operations within a small, dynamic team.

Last Tuesday on a glorious sunny evening we celebrated Artist Writing Group’s first publication ‘A Finely Tuned Battery of Senses’; a culmination of their writing workshop and response to LA Timpa’s solo exhibition ‘Come Back’ earlier this year.

Thank you to all participants of the past workshops, Oli Marden oli mardon & Frank Wates for their introduction to the event on Tuesday and Emre Ataman , Pip Hudd, Martha Lowres and Ella Soni for reading from their lists, fables, structural texts and other musings in the gallery garden.

The publication authored by the group as a collective work brings together layered compositions of writing, edits, found images, working notes, and collective responses.

Armineh Negahdari’s drawings extend beyond paper and briefly inhabit the materials of everyday life. Bedsheets, fabric scraps, wrapping paper, and cardboard packaging are co-opted as surfaces, carrying the quiet residues of her routine; appearing to spill into provisional space, these materials retain their own histories and resistances. On these textured, unstable grounds, grainy smudges of graphite and oil disperse a portrayal of figures, anchored within makeshift and fragile landscape. Negahdari’s use of repetition, texture and natural elements echo poetic structures such as rhythm, silence and metaphor, which closely resonate with the compositional logic that is instinctive and reflects on wider forces that are shaped by repression and forced erasure.

Join us with Art Writing Group to celebrate the launch of 'A Finely Tuned Battery of Senses', their new publication produced in collaboration with Cell Project Space.

Throughout the evening, selected members of Art Writing Group will present live readings from texts developed during past workshops, bringing the group's collective writing practice into the gallery. Copies of the publication will be available to take home, alongside a selection of self-produced badges created by the group.

Founded by artist and curator Oli Mardon and artist Frank Wates, Art Writing Group brings together students and practising artists to develop and experiment with workshop formats that explore contemporary art in galleries across London. Through collaborative writing exercises, participants respond to exhibitions with personal reflections, encounters, and experimental texts that engage with the structures and material qualities of exhibitions, often combining images, annotations, notes, and fragments of writing.

'A Finely Tuned Battery of Senses' brings together layered compositions of the group's writing, edits, found images, working notes, and collective responses to LA Timpa's solo exhibition 'Come Back', presented earlier this year at Cell Project Space.
The launch takes place alongside a special late opening of 'The Living River' by Armineh Negahdari, extending the exhibition's exploration of poetry and language.

Traces of sparse material give form to thought.

Armineh Negahdari (b. 1994, Tehran) lives and works in Bordeaux. Her current solo exhibition, What Colour Is Your Sky Today?, is on view at Fondation L V, Paris, as part of OPEN SPACE from April to August 2026. The exhibition is presented in partnership with S.M.A.K. Ghent, which will host a solo exhibition of the artist’s work in 2027. Negahdari will take part in a group presentation at Castello di Rivoli Museo d'Arte Contemporanea, Turin, in October this year organised in connection with a retrospective of Marisa Merz.

Negahdari’s practice unfolds without prior planning, immersed in an intense flow where line is guided by intuition. Drawing runs as a continuous thread – across oil, graphite, and charcoal – to reflect a sustained commitment to the legitimacy of her thoughts and actions. Equally rapid are her marks that push against the limits of the sparse mediums she employs, where traces give form to thought as it unfolds.
