Old Hastings Mill Store Museum

Old Hastings Mill Store Museum City of Vancouver's oldest surviving building (built c. 1868). Museum est. on January 16, 1932. Is it a ghost from the Great Vancouver Fire of June 13, 1886?

“When it’s quiet at the old Hastings Mill store you can hear the past whispering to you…”

On very quiet afternoons when light dances with shadow behind the Art Deco case of early BC relics you might sense a presence. The story of the Great Fire is just one of many connected to the Old Hastings Mill Store Museum. A huge oxen yoke and early logging photographs remind the visitor of when lumber baro

ns reigned over the land. And there are countless artifacts from the 1836 steamship SS Beaver, “the lifeline of the coast” that met a watery grave off Prospect Point. The museum’s other unique heritage items include Vancouver’s first city council table, legendary lifeguard Joe Fortes’ oil lamp and an original full-size Hansom cab. There’s also a fine collection of First Nations basketry and carvings along with an eclectic assortment of fascinating curios donated by Vancouverites over the years. Step into Vancouver’s past at the Old Hastings Mill Store Museum. The iconic “Old Mill Store” stood at the foot of Dunlevy Street, East of Gastown for more than 60 years, before it was rescued when Hastings Sawmill was slated for demolition. The Store was barged to its current location on Point Grey and re-opened as a museum in 1931 by the Native Daughters of B.C. Post #1. Founded in 1919, the non-profit, historical society composed of B.C. born volunteer women, continues to own the building and steward its amazing collection. Admission By Donation
All donations are used to maintain the building and museum. Booked Tours available

Join us on Saturday, June 13th as we recreate some moments from the Great Fire of Vancouver of 1886.

Imagine being in the newly incorporated City of Vancouver 140 years ago. Vancouver is Ashes author Lisa Anne Smith, with Peter Phillips in the role of Hastings Mill Store Manager Calvert Simson, recreate the events of June 13, 1886, when most of the city was destroyed by an out-of-control clearing fire. Sample fire refugee “provisions”, write a letter to Mayor Malcolm Maclean expressing your wishes for how the city should be rebuilt, enter a “Comfort Basket” free draw and learn about fire safety in our changing world.

Today on Museum Day, we reflect on how fortunate we are to be part of the Old Hastings Mill Store Museum community.

As volunteers, we are not just caring for a historic building — we are helping preserve stories, memories, and connections to Vancouver’s past for future generations. Every visitor, conversation, school tour, event, and cup of tea shared inside the museum reminds us that history is meant to be experienced together.

Museums are places of learning, reflection, curiosity, and community. They help us understand where we came from while encouraging meaningful conversations about where we are going.

Thank you to everyone who visits, supports, donates, volunteers, and shares their stories with us throughout the year. Your support helps keep local history alive and accessible to all.

Happy Museum Day from all of us at the Old Hastings Mill Store Museum. ❤️
