August was full of sold-out nights, special visits, and community celebrations at the museum. Let's take a look back!⁠

🀄🎤 Mahjong Night with dragontilesocialclub, August 11⁠
A full evening of mahjong, karaoke, and community filled all three floors of the museum. Guests gathered around 15 mahjong tables, took their turn singing on stage, and enjoyed bites from local Chinatown restaurants. Stay tuned for the next one 👀⁠

🏒🏓 Special Visits, August 15 & 18⁠
This month saw a couple special visits, including from Hayne Wai, a Chinatown historian and brother of Joe Wai who was the architect behind the Chinese Cultural Centre. Hayne also played hockey on a Chinatown team back in the days, adding another layer to the neighbourhood's rich history.⁠

We also welcomed Peter Joe, founder of Sunrise Soya Foods and a former table tennis elite, who stopped by for a game of ping pong. Peter played in the very first BC Secondary Schools Table Tennis Tournament in 1973 and represented the provincial team at the national championship in 1978.⁠

💕 Museum Meet Cute: A Qixi Singles Night, August 19⁠
In partnership with Thursday™, we hosted a Qixi themed singles night at the museum for guests, setting up a night of good conversation and new connections.⁠

🎶 "Songs of the Golden Era" Charity Concert, August 22⁠
Dream Factory received the perfect send off, with the @ songofthegoldenera concert celebrating Cantopop and Mandopop while raising funds to preserve and share the stories of our community. Thank you to the organizers, artists, musicians, crew, volunteers, sponsors, and donors who made the night possible.⁠

We also popped up around the city all month, from Presented By RBC | A Vancouver Chinatown Foundation Initiative (August 8 & 9) to the BC Dumpling Fest (August 15) to the Concord Summer Regatta Dragon Boat BC 龍舟會 (August 22), meeting neighbours and visitors along the way.⁠

Bryan Chiu never imagined a life without football. Despite early familial pressure to choose a more conventional professional path, Bryan’s love for the game led him to redefine success within his Chinese Canadian family, as well as in Canadian football history.⁠
⁠
A three-time Grey Cup winner (2002, 2009, 2016), Bryan Chiu holds the distinction of being only the third player of Chinese descent to be inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. Today, he spends his days nurturing and training the next generation of athletes as the head coach for his alma mater, Vancouver College.⁠

On this episode of The School Room, host Dr. Melissa Karmen Lee sits down with Bryan to discuss how Asian representation in football has changed since being drafted in 1996 by the Alouettes de Montréal, why he says coaching is the most rewarding part of his career, and what Chinese superstition he brings to his game days.⁠

Our school programs invite students to connect with Chinese Canadian history, heritage, and culture through hands-on, curriculum-aligned learning — led by trained museum educators.

Students analyze primary source documents on the Chinese head tax and Exclusion Act, uncovering the legacies of pioneers, veterans, and advocates within our Period Rooms and "A Soldier for All Seasons" exhibitions.

Step back to the 1930s and spend a day with the Yip family, early residents of the Wing Sang Building. Students explore recreated living and school rooms through immersive, hands-on activities.

𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗿 🏛️
A guided highlights tour of the museum's current exhibitions, from early migration to contemporary culture and identity, adaptable to your class's learning outcomes.
🎓 Grades 9–12 & post-secondary | ⏱ 60 minutes

Round out any visit with an add-on: craft playdough mooncakes for Mid-Autumn Festival Traditions, screen the documentary "One of Ours" alongside "A Soldier for All Seasons," or explore Chinese New Year customs and craft your own fai chun (揮春).

What a memorable evening at Songs of the Golden Era! ✨

Set within our "Dream Factory" exhibition, the concert brought beloved Chinese pop classics to life through music and shared memories. From the first familiar melodies, we were transported back to the golden era of Cantopop and Mandopop, revisiting songs from the films and television dramas that became part of the soundtrack of so many lives.

A heartfelt thank you to our talented performers: Yuen Wah, Stephen Au, Dino Acconci, Fiona Yuen, Edward Chui, Kayi Cheung, Gloria Tang, Peggy Davis, Shannon Chung, Herbert Kwan, Addison Wong, Damiano Acconci, and Olivia Yi. Thank you for sharing your talents and making the evening so special.

Together, the concert raised an incredible $62,000 in support of the Chinese Canadian Museum’s exhibitions and programs.

We’re incredibly grateful to the organizers who brought the evening together, as well as every donor, sponsor, supporter, volunteer, and member of the behind-the-scenes team who made it possible.

NEW EXHIBITION ALERT — “Asian Comics” is coming to the museum!

On view from October 7, 2026 to August 15, 2027, "Asian Comics: Evolution of an Art Form" makes its Canadian premiere at the Chinese Canadian Museum, bringing together more than 400 original artworks, rare publications, and multimedia installations from across Asia.

Originally developed by the Barbican Centre and now touring internationally, "Asian Comics" is the most comprehensive exhibition of its kind, exploring the history and global influence of Asian comics. From early graphic traditions to manga and contemporary digital works, the exhibition looks at how comics have evolved as a powerful form of art and storytelling.

Presented for the first time at the Chinese Canadian Museum, the Vancouver presentation includes a new exhibition section, as it spotlights the work of Chinese Canadian artists and authors whose stories invite visitors to consider the many ways diaspora shapes identity, memory, family, and belonging.

Come celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival with us! 🥮🏮

Join us September 26–27 for a weekend of performances, food, and family-friendly activities at the museum.

On the Saturday, Five Blessings Collective takes the stage with "The Legend of the Whooshhh", an English and Cantonese performance sharing the stories and traditions behind Mid-Autumn Festival.

On the Sunday, Chinese-Singaporean chef Christopher Leow leads a hands-on snowy mooncake workshop, where you’ll learn to make mango sticky rice and blueberry chocolate mooncakes to enjoy or take home.

Throughout the weekend, drop in to sample mooncakes courtesy of Sungiven Foods, make your own playdough mooncake, and create a Chinese knot to decorate a Mid-Autumn lantern at home.

Come celebrate the festival, learn something new, and spend the weekend with us in Chinatown 🌕

That’s a wrap on Dream Factory! 🪩✨

Since opening in May 2025, "Dream Factory: Cantopop Mandopop 1980s–2000" has welcomed visitors into a world of music, fashion, art, and memories. From the floor-to-ceiling LED sound wall to stage fashion reimagined by six Asian Canadian designers to a karaoke stage installation, it’s been wonderful to see how these stories and sounds have connected with so many of you.

To everyone who visited, sang along, shared a memory, brought friends and family, or came back for one last look in the final weeks, thank you for being part of our second-ever feature exhibition.

This award-winning exhibition was made possible with the generous support of the Government of British Columbia, Din Tai Fung 鼎泰豐, Fairchild TV 新時代電視, Talentvision, Fairchild Radio AM 1470 and FM 96.1, and Fête Chinoise.

Now, our second-floor gallery is getting ready for its next chapter. We’ll be transforming the space over the coming weeks, with a significant announcement to come this week 👀

In the meantime, the rest of the museum remains open, including "Momentum: Power and Identity in Sports", our permanent exhibitions on the third floor, and 1889 Trading Co. We look forward to seeing you!

Mahjong, karaoke, and a full house at the museum. 🀄🎤

Last week, dragontilesocialclub brought all three floors of the museum to life for a sold-out evening of play, music, food, and community. Guests gathered around 15 Hong Kong-style mahjong tables, took their turn in the karaoke room, and enjoyed bites from local Chinatown restaurants throughout the night.

What a fun evening seeing the museum filled with so much energy and so many people coming together. Thanks to everyone who joined and helped make the evening such a memorable one.

Last night, we teamed up with Thursday | Vancouver for "Museum Meet Cute: A Qixi Singles Night", inspired by the Chinese Qixi Festival or Chinese Valentine's Day. Singles took over the museum for an evening of pop-up bars, Red String of Fate games, karaoke, and plenty of opportunities to meet someone new.⁠

What a fun night seeing the museum become a place for new connections, shared laughs, and a different kind of night out in Chinatown. Thanks to everyone who joined us and made the evening such a fun one.⁠

A big congratulations to Howie Tsui!

Howie Tsui, one of six artists featured in our past exhibition "Reshaping Collections: Where History Meets Art", has been named a Laureate of the 2026 Hnatyshyn Foundation - Fondation Hnatyshyn Mid-Career Award for Excellence in Visual Arts.⁠
⁠
Born in Hong Kong, Howie is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice spans ink painting, sculpture, installation, and animation. Drawing from Chinese artistic traditions while experimenting with contemporary technology, his work uses humour and satire to explore history, identity, and the complexities of diasporic life. In "Reshaping Collections", Howie’s work invited visitors to look at history and cultural memory from a different perspective, bringing the past into conversation with the present.⁠

We loved having the opportunity to share his work with our visitors and are so happy to see his contributions to Canadian visual arts celebrated with this recognition. Congratulations, Howie! ⁠
