One of my latest pet peeves are these little plastic spouts that are being put on milk and other beverage containers. Each container has 3 little pieces of plastic that do not get recycled, and which make it more difficult to recycle the entire container. Yes, the little pieces are plastic, so technically, they should get recycled, but these small pieces of plastic most frequently fall through the cracks and get swept into items that go into the landfill. Also, the most commonly recycled items are ones that are made from only 1 material. Adding the plastic spout increases the number of materials and makes it more difficult to recycle the container. What was wrong with the old containers that were more eco-friendly? Think of it... if you buy a container of milk every week, that's only 3 little pieces of plastic, but if 100,000 people buy milk each week that's 300,000 little pieces of plastic... how about 500,000 milk containers? 1,000,000?
You can make choices at the grocery store that will impact the environment.
