A reminder that afterlives and entanglements opens tomorrow, Thursday, October 15, at Gallery Gachet. We invite you to join us for the opening reception from 6–8 PM.

Bringing together three self-directed artistic practices around inquiries into memory, inheritance, sovereignty, and belonging, afterlives and entanglements considers the ongoing and persistent afterlives of colonization as both wound and instrument that wounds.

The exhibition attends to the structures, images, languages, materials, and feelings through which colonial histories continue to inhabit the present. Across distinct Indigenous, Black, and diasporic Asian positionalities, Rain Cabana-Boucher, Ogheneofegor Obuwoma, and Gloria Wong examine the entanglements of personal and political histories through Indigenous material practices, the bureaucratic architecture of colonial rule, and the translation of sovereignty across diasporic and matrilineal generations.

Their proximity proposes no equivalence. Rather, difference is held intact as each particular history and way of knowing touches, intersects, and pulls apart. What possibilities might be wrested from such an existence? How might we form new ways of being within and beyond that which haunts, persists, holds, and takes away?

For the duration of the exhibition, Gallery Gachet will operate seven days a week, including extended opening hours on Sundays and Mondays, through October 26.

Write Like a Deer is a collection of essays, poetry and hybrid texts that were written by the Gachet Writer's Group and Suparna Choudhury (Suparna) at the Recovery Cafe in response to Choudhury’s writing prompt about sensory writing and lingering in what we don't yet know. Participants wrote and rewrote texts that stayed in perception before entering into meaning, letting uncertainty enter both language and form. Suparna Choudhury was hosted as an writer-in-residence at Gallery Gachet to facilitate the workshop that led to Write Like a Deer in 2026. The chapbook was launched at the Downtown Eastside Writers' Festival in Vancouver in May 2026, alongside a writing session by Cecily Nicholson.

Gachet Writer's Group was created in April 2024 and is led by Bruce Ray. It is a collective who gather to participate in conversations about the process of creativity, and who speak to mental illness and problems of stigma. Write Like a Deer contains writings by both members and participants including Jaeger Cormack, Landon D. Hildebrandt, Quin Martins, Catherine McLellan, Simon Michelini, Nathaniel Miller, Rory Mills, Cynthia Peng, Tom Quirk, Bruce Ray, and Sandra Yuen.

Gallery Gachet’s Operations Director & Associate Curator, Sol Hashemi, will be speaking tomorrow as part of Unfolding Desire Assembly, a one-day curatorial program presented by the Vancouver Art Gallery as part of its Art of Wellbeing initiative, in collaboration with Griffin Art Projects and Empty Space Art Studio Society.

Bringing together Vancouver-based and international artists, curators and researchers, the Assembly considers the relationships between mental health, desire and artistic labour, asking what forms of collective care, social infrastructure and institutional support are needed to sustain artistic life.

Sol’s presentation, “Reclaiming the Conditions of Realization: On Picnic For a N(n)ervous System,” takes Gallery Gachet’s recent exhibition Picnic For a N(n)ervous System: Von Coffin & Warren Neidich as a point of departure. Drawing on Gachet’s history and its relationship to the mental health consumer and psychiatric survivor movement, the talk considers the artwork as both outcome and seed of an ecological process of genesis, and asks how art might cultivate an attentiveness to the particularities of life.

Sol will be speaking during the Assembly’s afternoon session at the Vancouver Art Gallery, 1:30–4 PM.

We’re excited to see this conversation continue beyond the gallery and hope to see some of you there.

This International Overdose Awareness Day, we’re asking our community to support the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users (VANDU) as they gather to grieve, remember, organize, and continue the fight for the lives and dignity of drug users.

On August 31, VANDU and community partners will gather for a community memorial at Oppenheimer Park from 12–2 PM, followed by a public memorial rally at the Vancouver Art Gallery from 5–7 PM.

VANDU is currently raising $7,000 to support food and hydration, peer labour and stipends, transportation, honoraria, permits, insurance, and the practical work of keeping people safe and supported throughout the day.

Gallery Gachet is proud to support this work and the communities who continue to organize against the ongoing toxic drug crisis.

Join us this Friday for a reading of Christian Vistan’s Sunset Table in its entirety, with Sidney Gordon, Asia Jong, Scott Kemp, Tiziana La Melia, and Christian Vistan.

Bringing together artists and writers whose practices engage archives, familial histories, memory, place, and language, the readers will collectively give voice to Sunset Table as the sun sets over the city.

Along the gallery’s east wall sits Christian Vistan’s Sunset Table (2016/2026). Originally developed as an artist publication a decade ago, the installation spatializes the publication’s central inquiry into the calculation of distance.

Following the instructions of a 1963 sunset table, Vistan attempts to trace a trajectory from the Pacific Northwest to Dinalupihan, Philippines, eventually exposing the limits of the table’s system of measurement. What emerges is “not a successful translation, but a record of impossibility.”—from Flooding, by curator Troy Johnson.

Join us this Friday, August 21, from 7:30–9pm on the Sun Wah Centre rooftop for a reading of Sunset Table in its entirety.

Join us for a sunset reading on the rooftop of the Sun Wah Centre. Christian Vistan will read Sunset Table in its entirety, joined by several readers whose practices explore archives, familial history, time, weather, and phenomenology.

Re-released on the occasion of Flooding at Gallery Gachet, Sunset Table presents an exercise in mapping distance. By calculating the sunset from the Pacific Northwest to Bataan, Philippines, Vistan creates a record of impossibility. Sunset Table transforms an instrument of calculation into an index of displacement. Rather than attempting to overcome distance, Vistan turns his attention towards it, remaining open to the possibilities that emerge from tracing the separation.
