Copies of Sunset Table, an editioned publication by Christian Vistan, are still available at the gallery.

Please note that Gallery Gachet will be closed this Saturday, but Flooding has been extended for one final weekend. Join us Saturday, September 5 and Sunday, September 6, from 12–5 PM before the exhibition closes.

This International Overdose Awareness Day, we’re asking our community to support the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users (VANDU) as they gather to grieve, remember, organize, and continue the fight for the lives and dignity of drug users.

On August 31, VANDU and community partners will gather for a community memorial at Oppenheimer Park from 12–2 PM, followed by a public memorial rally at the Vancouver Art Gallery from 5–7 PM.

VANDU is currently raising $7,000 to support food and hydration, peer labour and stipends, transportation, honoraria, permits, insurance, and the practical work of keeping people safe and supported throughout the day.

Gallery Gachet is proud to support this work and the communities who continue to organize against the ongoing toxic drug crisis.

Sunset Table Reading

Join us this Friday for a reading of Christian Vistan’s Sunset Table in its entirety, with Sidney Gordon, Asia Jong, Scott Kemp, Tiziana La Melia, and Christian Vistan.

Bringing together artists and writers whose practices engage archives, familial histories, memory, place, and language, the readers will collectively give voice to Sunset Table as the sun sets over the city.

Copies of Sunset Table will be available for purchase via cash or e-transfer. The Sun Wah Centre rooftop is wheelchair accessible.

Along the gallery’s east wall sits Christian Vistan’s Sunset Table (2016/2026). Originally developed as an artist publication a decade ago, the installation spatializes the publication’s central inquiry into the calculation of distance.

Following the instructions of a 1963 sunset table, Vistan attempts to trace a trajectory from the Pacific Northwest to Dinalupihan, Philippines, eventually exposing the limits of the table’s system of measurement. What emerges is “not a successful translation, but a record of impossibility.”—from Flooding, by curator Troy Johnson.

Join us this Friday, August 21, from 7:30–9pm on the Sun Wah Centre rooftop for a reading of Sunset Table in its entirety.

Sunset Table Reading

Join us for a sunset reading on the rooftop of the Sun Wah Centre. Christian Vistan will read Sunset Table in its entirety, joined by several readers whose practices explore archives, familial history, time, weather, and phenomenology.

Re-released on the occasion of Flooding at Gallery Gachet, Sunset Table presents an exercise in mapping distance. By calculating the sunset from the Pacific Northwest to Bataan, Philippines, Vistan creates a record of impossibility. Sunset Table transforms an instrument of calculation into an index of displacement. Rather than attempting to overcome distance, Vistan turns his attention towards it, remaining open to the possibilities that emerge from tracing the separation.

This summer, Gallery Gachet is pleased to present a season of free, drop-in community art workshops in Oppenheimer Park and Pigeon Park.

Led by artists and community facilitators, these workshops invite participants of all ages and skill levels to explore a range of creative practices, including zine making, cardboard loom weaving, cyanotypes, visible mending, patch making, and more. The workshops also provide an opportunity for participants interested in contributing work to Gallery Gachet’s 17th Annual Oppenheimer Park Art Show.

All materials and light refreshments will be provided, and no registration is required.

Bringing together the work of Dana Qaddah and Christian Vistan, Flooding considers the circulation of disaster media and the politics of looking, examining how images shape our understanding of catastrophe, witnessing, and place.

A cash mocktail bar, along with refreshments and light snacks, will be available throughout the evening.

Opening July 10, 6–8pm at Gallery Gachet!

Gallery Gachet is pleased to present Flooding, guest curated by Gallery Gachet Curator-in-Residence Troy Johnson.

Flooding brings together the work of Dana Qaddah and Christian Vistan. Both artists work with and against the images and narratives that circulate in the wake of disaster. Drawing on countervisual strategies, Qaddah and Vistan offer distinct approaches toward a shared goal: pushing back against the passive consumption of disaster media.

Countervisuality, as coined by Nicholas Mirzoeff, is a claim to reciprocity made by those who have historically been subjects of the imperial gaze. This “right to look” stands in direct opposition to visuality, which refers to the authority claimed by those in power to define and govern through images. Flooding considers disaster media as export, examining the ways its circulation permits those in the Global North to imagine precarity as something that exists elsewhere.

Through sonic, literary, and material practices, Qaddah and Vistan challenge reductive representations of catastrophe, foregrounding the singularity of lived experience and the complex relations that emerge through witnessing. In doing so, Flooding approaches disaster while simultaneously rendering the viewer visible.

The exhibition runs July 10–September 4, 2026.

Join artists Vanessa Mercedes Figueroa and Phillip McCrum in conversation with moderator Gareth James on June 19.

Working across installation, sound, and image, both artists explore absence, displacement, memory, and the fragmentation of lived experience. Through processes of gathering, reuse, and material transformation, their practices consider how meaning emerges from what is collected, discarded, and reassembled.

Together, they will discuss their contributions to Settle Down, Not There and reflect on the intersections of narrative, material, and memory within the exhibition.
