Sydney Steel - 1950s - World Class Operation 🏭🔥
People forget how BIG this was.
Built in 1901 in Whitney Pier as Dominion Iron & Steel Company, it was the LARGEST integrated steel mill in the British Commonwealth when it opened.
By 1914: 50% of ALL steel made in Canada came from Sydney
During WWII: 43% of Canada's steel - shells, ship plate, big naval guns - all from Sydney, made from Bell Island iron ore and Dominion coal coke
In the 1950s film you see here: 4,791 men working, blast furnaces, open hearths, rolling rails that went from Atlantic to Pacific. Rails for the whole country, plate for shipyards.
By 1954, still 3,500 men - even after 1,200 layoffs when Ottawa modernized Central Canada and left Sydney behind.
This is Pt 6 of my 1950s Nova Scotia film - de-blurred and sharp now.
This wasn't just a plant; it built Cape Breton's industrial base. Fed families for 100 years. Cost $3 billion before it closed in 2001.
