FREE community day celebrating
World Oceans Day!

Participating partner: Team Whale, Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Team Whale is a research group with Fisheries and Oceans Canada in Maritimes Region, based out of the Bedford Institute of Oceanography.

Our research is focused on increasing our understanding of how whales, dolphins, and porpoises use waters off Nova Scotia throughout the year, to help better inform management and mitigation measures and protect them from threats from human activities.

Much of our work involves use of passive acoustic recorders to monitor areas of interest for whales– we spend much of our time “listening” for whales.

Our display aims to provide people with an opportunity to see how we study whale calls and identify species from the sounds that we record. You will have the opportunity to hear different species we have recorded, to imitate whale sounds and see if you can set off our automated whale detectors, and to talk to our acoustic analysts to learn more about the whale research we do here off Nova Scotia!
