Sandra Brownlee’s beloved objects, her tactile notebooks are presented at the centre of ‘The Word Made Physical’.

This selection ranges from the 1990s to today. Each is wrapped in cloth and contains a wide range of collaged, sewn, drawn, painted and written material. Often the books are even bound by Sandra herself.

Her intention is to make them into objects that one wants, “to walk towards…to hug…to live with” facilitating a daily practice of working within them.

Opened, closed or covered to reveal only a select few pages, this presentation of notebooks connects with and weaves into the other texts and works that make up ‘The Word Made Physical’.

For her current exhibition, “The Word Made Physical” Sandra Brownlee constructed a new installation of her work, “Meaningful Words”. The resulting work is both a sculpture and a poem.

Sandra Brownlee’s current exhibition, “The Word Made Physical” is an exploration of how she arrived at her current mode of working with text, sculpture and embroidery.

The exhibition focuses on new works, which derive their titles from quotations Brownlee has collected from a lifetime of reading. The quotes all relate to finding one’s voice or one’s way in the world.

The new works are paired with earlier works, such as this one, an excerpt from her installation, “Stitched Nightgown (In-Situ Project)” 2015. The earlier works give context to the Brownlee’s current mode of materializing language by sharing examples of when writing—especially embroidered text—began entering her practice.

“The Word Made Physical” remains on view through November 07, 2026.

The Blue Building is pleased to invite you to the opening celebration of our next exhibition. “The Word Made Physical” a solo exhibition by Sandra Brownlee opens this Saturday 12 September with a reception at the gallery from 2pm – 5pm. All are welcome!

The opening reception will be accompanied by a performance at 3pm.

The Blue Building is thrilled to exhibit with artist B. Brookbank for the first time. Born and raised in Nova Scotia, Brookbank’s practice engages photography, moving image, sculpture and installation. They explore themes of longing, love, grief, decay, disarray and the erotic—often through ad hoc arrangements of familiar, found materials—often carefully framed and transformed within domestic contexts.
