The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is the largest art museum in Atlantic Canada. Since 1908, the Gallery has been a gateway for the visual arts in Atlantic Canada by engaging people with art. Due to disruptions in funding, Autism Arts in Halifax and Yarmouth will not be offered as part of our fall programming.

For 20 years, Autism Arts has provided opportunities for Autistic people to connect, create and explore their creativity through a partnership between the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (AGNS) and Autism Nova Scotia.

We understand this may be disappointing news for our community. These programs are currently suspended while we explore options for continuing Autism Arts in these regions.

Please stay tuned for upcoming fall programming, which we’ll be sharing soon.

Forshaw Day came to Nova Scotia with a background in architecture and design, but it was the province’s landscape that would become central to his artistic life.

After arriving in Halifax in 1862, Day worked as a draftsman at the Royal Naval Dockyard and taught art while building a reputation as a painter. Just a year later, he held a solo exhibition of Nova Scotia landscapes. Over the following decades, he travelled throughout the province, sketching and painting the places he encountered along the way.

Forshaw Day: Looking Outward is now open for all visitors to explore. Drop in and let us know which landscape is your favourite!

Born on this day (August 24, 1920 – July 16, 2013), Alex Colville was a famous Canadian painter known for his precise, realist style that mixed quiet everyday scenes with a strange, tense feeling.

Dogs, in addition to personifying elemental goodness, are Colville’s symbolic self-portraits. As a dog sits in the backseat while a woman reverses, the artist obscures the driver’s face to make the animal’s character more discernible. The animal acts as a silent doppelgänger observing the world through a quiet connection.

This work and more by Colville, Tom Forrestall, Mary Pratt, and Christopher Pratt will be featured in Colville, Forrestall, Pratt & Pratt: The Work Behind the Work, opening November 7. The exhibition offers a closer look at the creative processes, studies, and careful observations behind the works of four celebrated Atlantic Realist artists. Stay tuned as we look behind the work!
