Just because history is in the past, doesn't mean it isn't changing. Our modern understanding of history is often shifting based on new resources becoming available - and this is a perfect example of that!

While doing research for our newest outdoor pop-up exhibit on the history of Halloween, we discovered that the earliest known use of the phrase "trick or treat" isn't dated to Blackie, Alberta in 1927, but to Sault Ste. Marie in 1917!

Check out Tricks, Treats & Traditions: A History of Halloween in Southern Alberta on display now until November 5 and learn all about the origins of many of the Halloween traditions we practice today.

👋Meet Dr. Francesca Zambolin! Her research focuses on women’s histories, memory and experiences during the Second World War.

Let Francesca give you a glimpse into a very different time at Lougheed House – the years when hundreds of women lived and worked at what was then called Lougheed Barracks during their time in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps in the 1940s.

Curious about Calgary’s wartime history, or interested in the lives of some of Canada’s first official women serving in the military? This promises to be an interesting window into our local past and the lives of Calgarian women during WWII.

Did you know that in for three whole years between 1942 and 1945 the children of Alberta gave up trick or treating for candy and instead collected pennies for the "Milk for Britain" fund?

During World War Two, when Lougheed House was Lougheed Barracks, the "Milk for Britain" fund was a project started by the Kinsmen that raised money for milk for children in Britain struggling with shortages from the war.

While the "Milk for Britain" fund is long gone, trick-or-treaters from the early 2000s may remember that the charity UNICEF started a similar campaign, sending children with boxes for coins when they went out on Halloween.

Register today for "Pranks, Parties & Pumpkins: A Halloween History Tour" at Lougheed House to learn more about how Halloween was celebrated right here in Calgary and where the traditions we practice for the holiday today originated.

We're bringing our Halloween trivia back from the dead... and it's scarier than ever! Test your knowledge about iconic horror books and movies and historic Halloween traditions at Lougheed House Trick or Trivia Night on Halloween Eve Eve (October 29)!

Costumes are encouraged (but please no masks or prop weapons!)
This is a free, adults-only (18+) event - no registration is required. Seating is limited, so tables are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
