Glenbow's team recently celebrated an exciting milestone: with staff now back in the building, Glenbow's Conservators moved the first-ever art and objects out of storage and into Glenbow's new industry-leading Conservation Lab for treatment.

This marks a major step forward as Conservators begin preparing objects for display upon the museum's reopening. There were smiles and applause all around as the team celebrated this huge moment.

The Conservation Lab is also part of a new behind-the-scenes experience that will debut when the museum reopens. Visitors will have the opportunity to view this space through expansive new windows and learn how Conservators maintain and preserve the museum's extensive collections. We can't wait for you to experience it!

Toronto artist An Te Liu (b. 1967) has created everything from enormous installation works to letterpress prints, but he is perhaps best known for his work in ceramic and bronze.

While his early sculptures often integrated consumer goods such as humidifiers and air purifiers, he later became interested in the materials used to package consumer goods, particularly polystyrene (often called Styrofoam).

Liu collected pieces of discarded packaging he felt had striking forms and used them as the foundations for his sculptures, which evoke both the discarded packaging and the original goods held by the packages.

On our blog, learn about how Liu's interests in consumer goods and art history have inspired his unique approach to sculpture: https://bit.ly/3PMNgzB

In honour of Asian Heritage Month, we’re celebrating the work of an incredible Japanese artist on our blog. Yoshijiro Urushibara (1888-1953) was an internationally acclaimed printmaker whose work required extreme precision and focus.

Urushibara is known for his virtuosic work in colour woodcut — a centuries-old practice he reinvented for a modern audience. His work is defined by a dramatic tension between colours and a perfect synchronicity in process — a combination few artists achieve, but one Urushibara attained in dozens of prints over the course of his career.

His guidance also helped Canadian artist Walter J. Phillips perfect his colour woodcut printing practice, shaping a legacy that resonates through Glenbow's collections today.

May is Leave a Legacy Month: a time to consider how charitable giving can make a lasting impact. It’s an opportunity to reflect on the values and causes that have shaped your life, and to plan for how you can support them well into the future.

Calgary's Indonesian community is shaping a compelling new display set to debut when Glenbow reopens in its revitalized home, the JR Shaw Centre for Arts & Culture.

This future display is part of a collaboration with Calgary's Indonesian, Ethiopian, and Mexican communities, highlighting the diversity of collections in Glenbow’s care and reflecting the museum’s commitment to telling meaningful, community-driven stories. Each community has worked closely with Glenbow's team to select art, objects, and belongings that represent and celebrate their cultural heritage.

In celebration of Asian Heritage Month, Indonesian community members Ratna Wynne and Cindy Halim reflected on the curatorial process and shared what the project means to them and their community.

Today is Red Dress Day: a day of reflection on the crisis of violence against Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people in Canada.

This crisis is rooted in colonialism and perpetuated by systemic inequalities. As a museum engaged in decolonization, Glenbow is committed to confronting these injustices by amplifying Indigenous voices, fostering environments for learning and dialogue, and supporting community-led efforts toward healing.

We encourage our community to take this day to learn, reflect, and consider the role each of us plays in fostering a more just and equitable future. As we honour those who are missing and mourn those who were taken, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting meaningful change.

May the fourth be with you! Did you know Glenbow has an expansive collection of toys from the 19th and 20th centuries? In honour of Star Wars Day, we’re spotlighting a few recent acquisitions from a galaxy far, far away.

These Star Wars action figures were part of a donor’s childhood toy collection, received on Christmases and birthdays over the years. As the youngest child, his toys were often hand-me-downs — so when he received these new, he took special care of them by saving many of the accessories and keeping them in great condition.

These figures are from the Kenner toy brand’s original Star Wars line, which ran from 1978 to 1985. Consisting of 96 action figures, vehicles, and playsets, the line was incredibly popular, selling more than 300 million units during its original run.

Glenbow is celebrating its 60th anniversary! We’re marking the occasion with stories about Glenbow’s origins, evolution, and what’s next.

Ten years ago, Glenbow celebrated its 50th anniversary with Glenbow at 50: A Pop-Up Exhibition of 50 Extraordinary Works of Art. This exhibition showcased a range of artworks selected to represent the scope and diversity of Glenbow’s collection since its founding in 1966. Here, we're revisiting a selection of artworks from the exhibition.

When Glenbow reopens in its revitalized home, the JR Shaw Centre for Arts & Culture, more of the museum’s extensive collections will be available to view more often. Learn more on our blog: https://bit.ly/4eRCodZ
