Honey Ant Gallery

Honey Ant Gallery Aboriginal art specialists, est. 2005. View works online, or by private appointment at our Sydney home gallery.

Established in 2005, we are proud to showcase the immense talent of a select group of Aboriginal artists from Australia's central desert. As a family we frequently travel to central Australia to source art from remote Aboriginal community art centres. Our gallery is named after the honey ant, a fascinating little ant that has learnt to accommodate the harshness of the Australian desert by 'storing

' food as nectar in its abdomen. Our art is primarily sourced from country favoured by honey ants. We are members of the Indigenous Art Code and committed to the principles of ethical trade in Indigenous art.

✨Mitjili Napurrula✨

Superb, contemporary work by the late Mitjili. Measures 100 x 90cm, and is stretched, ready for a lovely new home.

Her famous signature style represents the desert oak / spearwood trees, which are used for spear making. Her use of bold colours and structured patterns makes her one of Australia’s most highly recognised artists.

✨Athena Granites Nangala paints her magical “Seven Sisters” story✨

An ancestral man was in love with the sisters, and chased them, but the ladies wanted nothing to do with him! The women were ultimately too clever for him, and ascended in to the sky, forming a constellation of 7 stars.

This stunner, yet to be stretched, is 61 x 61cm. Check out our website, we have a few new gorgeous works in by her.

✨our latest, very special, acquisition✨

Jorna Newberry, Perentie Dreaming, 183 x 122cm

Jorna Newberry was a Pitjantjatjara woman.  She was a “bush baby” and spent her childhood living the traditional lifestyle of hunting and gathering.

Jorna is most famous for her representation of the Perentie lizard, which she paints in exquisite detail. The reptile is the fourth largest lizard on earth and important in Aboriginal culture in both a totemic way and as an important food source. Her paintings depict the circular patterning and intricate dotting on the back of the lizard. The swirling designs also represent the tracks of the animals and the contours of the landscape.

Tommy Watson, one of the country’s greatest Indigenous artists, was Jorna Newberry’s uncle and he was instrumental in teaching Jorna how to paint.
