Artist Lucas Ihlein collaborates with scientist-inventor Allan Yeomans to demonstrate the Yeomans Carbon Still, a machine designed to measure soil carbon. The device offers a potential pathway for farmers to be paid for sequestering COâ‚‚ through regenerative agriculture.

Developed as part of Baking Earth: Soil and the Carbon Economy (2019), this project brings together art, science and agriculture to explore how a future carbon economy might function.

Originally presented in Shapes of Knowledge at the Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA) , 2019.

How can new rituals be invented to connect people to Country and develop landscape literacy?

Artists Kim Williams and Lucas Ihlein worked with farmer Simon Mattsson and community members in Mackay, Queensland, planting a multispecies crop of sugarcane and sunflowers as a demonstration of soil health and regenerative agriculture.

Seed and Song (2018) documents the planting event, featuring the Sakwolo Islander Dancers and the Diranga Gangali Aboriginal Dancers. The work brings together performance, agriculture and community knowledge, foregrounding relationships between people, plants and place.

“An Artist, a Farmer and a Scientist walk into a bar…” sounds like the start of a joke, but it’s also the title of a project by the Kandos School of Cultural Adaptation (KSCA) .land that explores how we understand and relate to land through a series of collaborations with farmers, scientists, Aboriginal knowledge holders, chefs and rural innovators.

In one of these collaborations, artist Alex Wisser spent several months hand-digging a three-metre hole. The project culminated in a performance where he entered the hole and fasted for several days, positioning himself as a conduit to the earth.

Community members submitted written questions, which Wisser considered overnight before returning responses the following day as “The Earth Oracle”.
