Good Morning Lions and Lionesses.

A great story in today’s Herald Sun concerning our quest for our last 4 Fitzroy FC Player Photographs for our Pictorial Boards at our Museum at Marvel Stadium.

3 Henry’s and an Arch (John).

Fingers crossed we can get some leads to finish our project.

Good Afternoon Lions and Lionesses.

It’s been a fantastic 2,516 days since our
5 Pictorial Boards were erected at our Museum at Marvel Stadium on the 3rd of July 2019.

At this stage we had 222 missing Fitzroy FC Player Photographs of the 1,157 players that played at least 1 Senior Game for our Fitzroy FC in the VFL / AFL from 1897 to 1996.

Now we are down to 4 Player Photographs to obtain.

The last 4 have been very challenging to locate.

If there are any super sleuth’s out there, please feel free to do some research to help us to locate our 3 Henry’s and John “Arch”

Good Morning Lions and Lionesses.

We are pleased to announce that the Ledwidge family have been located and have provided us with a photo of ex Fitzroy Footballer Tom Ledwidge for our Player Pictorial Display Boards at our Museum at Marvel Stadium.

Up until now, our Historical Society had only a caricature of Tom.

Please find a story I wrote for Tom’s historical 112th birthday on our page on the 18th of June 2023:

Tom was recruited to our Fitzroy FC from the Yarrawonga FC for the 1936 VFL Season, making his Maroons debut in our 48 point loss to the Melbourne FC (who were finalists at Season’s end) in Round 2 at the MCG.

Tom played the very next week in Round 3 in our massive 80 point loss at our Brunswick Street Oval against the Premiers at Seasons end Collingwood.

Tom next played in our Senior side 15 weeks later in the 1936 VFL Season in Round 18, which was the final Home and Away game for the Season, kicking 2 goals at our Brunswick Street Oval in our narrow 1 point loss to the South Melbourne FC, who were the Runner-up side at Seasons end.

Our Fitzroy FC had a dismal 1936 Season winning our first Wooden Spoon, finishing last of the VFL League Ladder with only 2 wins and 16 losses.

Our dismal Season had a bright note
as our Denis “Dinny” Ryan won the Charles Brownlow Medal in his 2nd Season with our Fitzroy FC after being moved from attack to defence in 1936.

“Dinny” became our 5th Charles Brownlow Medallist in the 1930’s.

Tom was injured for the 1937 VFL Season.

Tom played 3 Senior games for our Fitzroy FC of a possible 18 in the 1938 VFL Season in his number 19 jumper for 3 losses and kicked a goal in our Round 1 loss to the Collingwood FC (who were the Runner-up side at Seasons end) by 18 points at our Brunswick Street Oval

Tom played his final Senior game for our Fitzroy FC in our 51 point loss to the eventual Premiers Carlton FC at their Princes Park Oval the very next week in Round 4, as our Fitzroy FC finished in 10 position on the VFL League Ladder, with 5 wins and 13 losses.

VFL Season 1938 saw the recruitment
to our Fitzroy FC of the Preston VFA star Fred Hughson, who kicked 62 goals from his 15 Home and Away games.

Fred soon moved to the Full-back position and it was in this position he was named in our Team of Our Century in 2001.

Fred was also our Captain Coach in our last Premiership in our own entity in the VFL in 1944.

Tom passed away on the 6th of October 1986 at the age of 75, 16 days after our Fitzroy FC played in our last Finals match in the VFL, as we went down to the Hawthorn FC by 56 points in the Preliminary Final at VFL Park Waverley.

Thank you for representing our Fitzroy FC Tom.

Below is a dossier I did for Graham for his 77th Birthday on the 1st of May 2022.

Graham was recruited to our Lions from the Reservoir FC for VFL Season 1963 making his Fitzroy FC debut in the final round of the 1963 VFL Season in our 53 point defeat by the Richmond FC at our Brunswick Street Oval in his number 16 jumper inherited from our Champion Half-forward Owen Abrahams who had retired the previous year.

Our Fitzroy FC finished with the Wooden Spoon in the 1963 VFL Season with 1 win and 17 losses, with our 1 win coming in our “Miracle Match” defeat of the eventual premiers at Season’s end the Geelong FC at our Brunswick Street Oval in Round 10 by 36 points.

Graham played the final 2 Home and Away games of VFL Season 1964 (Round 17 in our 1 point loss to the North Melbourne FC at their Arden Street Oval and Round 18 in our 80 point loss to the Carlton FC at their Princes Park Oval) for 2 losses, as our Lions finished with our 2nd consecutive Wooden Spoon in which we lost all our 18 Home and Away games.

Graham played 1 senior game in VFL Season 1965, his last senior game for our Lions, moving down the jumper ladder order to 48, capturing 7 possessions and a behind in our Round 11 loss to the Collingwood FC by 44 points at their Victoria Park Oval, as our Lions finished in 11th position on the VFL League Ladder with 4 wins and 14 losses, avoiding the wooden spoon by a mere 1.6%, with the Hawthorn FC capturing the Wooden Spoon.

A rather unsuccessful 3 year period for our Lions, winning only 5 Home and Away games.

Thank you for representing our Fitzroy FC Graham in such trying times.

Good Morning Lions and Lionesses.

A great day for our Fitzroy Brisbane Lions Historical Society Player Picture Boards at our Museum at Marvel Stadium with the unearthing of another Fitzroy Football Club player photograph for:

Frederick Henry Scott.

Fred was born on the 21st of October 1885 and was recruited to our Fitzroy FC from the Yarra Glen FC as a sturdy Follower.

Fred made his Fitzroy FC debut in our 28 point defeat of the Essendon FC at their East Melbourne Cricket Ground on the VFL’s opening day on Saturday the 30th of April 1910.

Fred played in our following week’s 63 point defeat of the St Kilda FC at our Brunswick Street Oval, kicking his only goal for our Fitzroy FC.

Fred played his last Senior game for our Fitzroy FC the very next week Round 3 as our Maroons went down to the Geelong FC by 14 points at our Brunswick Street Oval.

Fred later played 20 games (for 5 goals) for the Northcote FC in the VFA in the 1910 and 1912 Seasons and was later a Trainer for the Northcote FC.

Fred passed away on the 20th of April 1937 at the age of 51.

Welcome to our Museum at Marvel Stadium Fred.

You are home now.

Many thanks to Connors Roberts, who has merticulously researched Fred’s life and Football Club journey over a number of months and finally located a photo of Fred.

Only 4 player photographs remain to be identified for the 1,157 Fitzroy FC players that played at least 1 Senior game for our great club in the VFL / AFL from 1897 to 1996.
