Good Morning Lions and Lionesses.
We are pleased to announce that the Ledwidge family have been located and have provided us with a photo of ex Fitzroy Footballer Tom Ledwidge for our Player Pictorial Display Boards at our Museum at Marvel Stadium.
Up until now, our Historical Society had only a caricature of Tom.
Please find a story I wrote for Tom’s historical 112th birthday on our page on the 18th of June 2023:
Tom was recruited to our Fitzroy FC from the Yarrawonga FC for the 1936 VFL Season, making his Maroons debut in our 48 point loss to the Melbourne FC (who were finalists at Season’s end) in Round 2 at the MCG.
Tom played the very next week in Round 3 in our massive 80 point loss at our Brunswick Street Oval against the Premiers at Seasons end Collingwood.
Tom next played in our Senior side 15 weeks later in the 1936 VFL Season in Round 18, which was the final Home and Away game for the Season, kicking 2 goals at our Brunswick Street Oval in our narrow 1 point loss to the South Melbourne FC, who were the Runner-up side at Seasons end.
Our Fitzroy FC had a dismal 1936 Season winning our first Wooden Spoon, finishing last of the VFL League Ladder with only 2 wins and 16 losses.
Our dismal Season had a bright note
as our Denis “Dinny” Ryan won the Charles Brownlow Medal in his 2nd Season with our Fitzroy FC after being moved from attack to defence in 1936.
“Dinny” became our 5th Charles Brownlow Medallist in the 1930’s.
Tom was injured for the 1937 VFL Season.
Tom played 3 Senior games for our Fitzroy FC of a possible 18 in the 1938 VFL Season in his number 19 jumper for 3 losses and kicked a goal in our Round 1 loss to the Collingwood FC (who were the Runner-up side at Seasons end) by 18 points at our Brunswick Street Oval
Tom played his final Senior game for our Fitzroy FC in our 51 point loss to the eventual Premiers Carlton FC at their Princes Park Oval the very next week in Round 4, as our Fitzroy FC finished in 10 position on the VFL League Ladder, with 5 wins and 13 losses.
VFL Season 1938 saw the recruitment
to our Fitzroy FC of the Preston VFA star Fred Hughson, who kicked 62 goals from his 15 Home and Away games.
Fred soon moved to the Full-back position and it was in this position he was named in our Team of Our Century in 2001.
Fred was also our Captain Coach in our last Premiership in our own entity in the VFL in 1944.
Tom passed away on the 6th of October 1986 at the age of 75, 16 days after our Fitzroy FC played in our last Finals match in the VFL, as we went down to the Hawthorn FC by 56 points in the Preliminary Final at VFL Park Waverley.
Thank you for representing our Fitzroy FC Tom.
