Nobody remembers exactly everything they learned at a museum.

But they do remember how it felt.

Dr. John Falk spent fifty years asking people why they go. A month after a visit, more than 99% said the experience had affected their wellbeing. Almost none described what they learned. They described feeling calmer. More curious. Less alone.

We are information rich and meaning poor. Nobody needs a building to look something up anymore. We are short on soaces where people feel something at the same time.

IMOD exists to centralize, serve and celebrate, in global scope, the art and language of dance.

Nothing under glass. A museum you move through.

So where is this best moment kept, and shared, perhaps even re-lived?

Not the film. Studios protect films. We mean the rehearsal footage, the choreography, the dancers who built the lift before anyone filmed it. And the thousands of dances with no studio behind them at all, sitting on failing hard drives and disappearing with the people who carry them.

Dance history exists in fragments. We are building the first museum that holds it together. Nothing under glass. Everything built to be experienced.

Five hundred names will found it. Ninety-eight so far.

Jock Soto Day was a celebration, a massive collaboration, and also unto itself, its own constellation.

Dance is connected, and is, unto itself, a connector.

From now until the end of this year, IMOD is raising $150,000 to build the first ever GLOBAL digital constellation of as many dance partners as we can support, across the globe! The digital software is built by ACMI - and our first partners, are The Library for the Performing Arts , who of course, will be putting Jock Soto on the map. That means, then, 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗗𝗶𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝗻𝘄𝗮𝗶 𝗟𝗮𝗥𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 will be on the map, and Festival Ballet Albuquerque and Ballet TAOS, and on and on and on it will go!

This digital repository will be a connected sky of STARS, and inside every star, a world of possibilities.

A picture (or a dance) is worth 1,000 words, but we will try a few ro celebrate last night.

Jock Soto day is a celebration of Jock Soto’s life and career in dance and his invaluable dedication to the state of New Mexico upon his return home. International Museum of Dance hosted the first Jock Soto Day last year at the Lensic Performing Arts Center theater in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where the Navajo Nation deemed August 23 “Jock Soto Day.”

Every year on this date, the International Museum of Dance honors Jock Soto through performance, film, and public engagement.

Yesterday, 8/23/26, the second annual Jock Soto Day was celebrated with Festival Ballet Albuquerque and Ballet Taos Festival Ballet Albuquerque Ballet TAOS with choreography from Jock Soto himself.

Each year, IMOD and Jock Soto select a “Jock Soto Scholar,” who through the support of the Museum, receives a $2,500 unrestricted scholarship to continue dancing! In 2025, Heloha Tate was awarded this scholarship, Jerod Tate and this year, Vonn Kronberg received the award, a student of Festival Ballet Albuquerque since age 6 and with Jock Soto since age 12.

We are so grateful to the Sandia Preparatory School for hosting last night’s beautiful event, to the City if Albuquerque office of Indian affairs with Mayor Tim Keller CABQ Dept of Arts & Culture , to the Navajo Nation 25th Navajo Nation Council and all the dancers whose generosity filled all of our hearts with joy and hope.

Jock Soto Day is almost here.

The evening opens with hoop dance, which is a fitting place to start.

Long before he was a Principal Dancer with New York City Ballet, Jock knew about hoop dance from his mother, Josephine Towne, in Gallup. She danced herself, at a time when women in her culture traditionally did not.

Opening this year is ShanDien Sonwai LaRance 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗗𝗶𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝗻𝘄𝗮𝗶 𝗟𝗮𝗥𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 , Hopi, Tewa, Navajo and Assiniboine, one of the foremost hoop dancers working today. She started at eight, taught by her older brother Nakotah LaRance, a nine time World Champion who shaped the art form for the dancers who followed him. Nakotah was born on August 23, the same date the Navajo Nation set aside for Jock in 2025. ✨

August 23 represents two families, generations of tremendous artists, dancers and keepers of cultural expression, on one date.

🌟 The Collaborators Behind Jock Soto Day 🌟 Jock Soto

This year’s program wouldn’t be possible without two incredible women shaping ballet in New Mexico.

Patricia Dickinson, Artistic Director of Festival Ballet Albuquerque, has led New Mexico dance since founding Dance Theatre Southwest in 1995. A BFA graduate of Southern Methodist University, she danced with Dallas Opera and Dallas Ballet, working alongside legends like Arthur Mitchell and Marjorie Tallchief. She founded FBA in 2009, and in 2018, she collaborated with Robert Mirabal and Jock Soto himself on the world premiere of Sacred Journeys, a piece that returns to the stage this Jock Soto Day. Megan Yackovich is the founder of Ballet Taos, a professional contemporary ballet company and training academy in Taos, NM. Her students have gone on to companies and schools including American Ballet Theatre’s JKO School, School of American Ballet, The Royal Ballet School, and Houston Ballet, a testament to the caliber of training coming out of this community. 🌟 Meet Vonn Kronberg 🌟

Vonn has been training under Jock Soto since age twelve and at the Dance Theater Southwest, home of Festival Ballet Albuquerque, since he was just four years old, and this year, he’s the 2026 recipient of the Jock Soto Scholarship, an honor given each year to a dancer who embodies the tenacity, artistry, and individuality that define Jock’s own legacy.

At this year’s Jock Soto Day, Vonn takes the stage in a classical solo from Coppélia, and in “Vonn,” a piece choreographed for him personally by Jock.

Come celebrate Jock, Vonn, and the future of dance in New Mexico.
