CURRENTS New Media is an annual art + technology festival and a year-round gallery in Santa Fe. All events and programs are free.

The Festival brings together the work of established, unrecognized and emerging New Media artists, from New Mexico, the US and the world, for events showcasing interactive and fine art video installations, multimedia performances and web based art forms. Parallel Studios reaches out to local high and middle school students through its Youth Media Makers Program. While New Media Arts embody the bas

ic motivations and intentions of all the fine arts, their distinctive use of technologies that are pervasive in 21st Century culture, make New Media Art a bridge between contemporary art and the general public. The Festival introduces the public to new technology molded by artists into vehicles for expression and the communication of ideas, broadening the definition of 21st century art making and fostering a more expansive use of technology. CURRENTS provides the community with opportunities to experience New Media Arts in traditional venues, public and outdoor spaces. The Festival is enjoyed by a broad demographic – children spinning through the galleries reveling in interactive New Media – seniors contemplating image and meaning – working class families – and savvy collectors. The Festival is the result of a collaboration between Parallel Studios, its partners throughout he city and the many volunteers who invest their time to support this project. It is truly a community endeavor.

The Institute of American Indian Arts‘ Digital Dome is a studio and workshop space for students to explore cutting edge technologies. Join us for the 𝙄𝘼𝙄𝘼 𝘿𝙞𝙜𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝘿𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙎𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 this Saturday, June 22nd. Screenings will take place at 2pm, 3pm, and 4pm. IAIA’s spherical filmmaking classes prepare students in immersive media. 𝙏𝙤 𝘽𝙚 𝙃𝙚𝙡𝙙, 𝙏𝙤 𝘽𝙚𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙙 by Nancy Dewhurst & Kaitlin Bryson is an interactive video projection intended to be viewed on the palm of the viewer’s hand. The video is projected onto the floor and remains out of focus until a hand is brought close, bringing the image into focus. The video, a 16mm film shot in New Mexico, explores notions of being held, witnessing, and intricate relationships and interactions among the artists and the more-than-human world.

A letter from us to you…

CURRENTS is heading into its 15th year as an annual art and technology festival in Santa Fe, though we have actually been producing exhibitions since 2002 - 22yrs!

Over those many years we have grown from a small local event to an internationally recognized showcase of innovative work in this very 21st century medium. Through all of this development our goal has been to retain our grassroots and community based priorities while at the same time presenting world class exhibitions. It’s a tricky balance but one we feel we have stayed true to.

This year we are returning to our original festival home - El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe in the Railyard - June 14 - 23!!! We are so happy about this homecoming.

The CURRENTS Team is much larger than you may realize. Over the years it has included not only our year round staff but the festival management, tech and construction crews, 14 local high school and college interns, 20-30 volunteers, and of course the 65-95 local, national and international artists we present each year. For the 2024 festival, 55% of the 65 artworks have been created by regional artists! We are supporting the flights and lodging for 30 out of town artists.

Let us know that you appreciate the work we do for our community. Our goal is to raise $7,500 between now and June 23.

𝙄'𝙢 𝙃𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙉𝙤𝙬 by Josephine Wang is a site-specific installation exploring asynchronous existence by manipulating space, time, and perception. Inspired by the solar eclipse and the dynamics between humanity and the universe, it parallels human interactions with celestial movements. As individuals navigate life, they move closer, drift apart, and revolve around each other, experiencing distorted perceptions. Positioned in a transient space, this installation reflects the artist's journey of crafting an identity, existing in solitude, and reconciling with obscured self-perceptions in a foreign land.

The Railyard Park Conservancy is exhibiting “Activating Oga Po’ogeh Land Acknowledgement” through August! Make sure to view now and near our festival at the rail trail near Nuckolls Brewing Co.

The Railyard Park Conservancy’s Railyard Art Project is proud to present Activating Oga Po’ogeh Land Acknowledgement, a multimedia installation by Kathleen Wall (Jemez Pueblo/White Earth Chippewa) on exhibit through August 31st along the Santa Fe Rail Trail near Nuckolls Brewing Company (1611 Alcaldesa Street). Meet the artist at our opening celebration from 7:15pm-8:45pm on Friday, May 31st.

Constructed with metal frames and concrete ears of corn, the piece is brought to life through video installations of community members walking across Oga Po’ogeh. Wall’s goal for the project is to construct “conditions for people to encounter land acknowledgment communally. The work takes the land acknowledgment to the land itself — outdoors in a public space.”

𝙇𝙤𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙜 + 𝙁𝙤𝙧𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 is a generative audio-video
installation exploring the human-machine relationship. Combining physical and algorithmic choreography, it challenges AI concepts and examines technology’s impact on our bodies. Using architectural projection to animate dance, it evokes an emotional response from viewers. Media artists Matt Gingold, Philippe Pasquier, and Thecla Schiphorst collaborate, blending machine learning and digital choreography to create an immersive experience.

𝙈𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙆𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥: 𝘼𝙣 𝙀𝙭𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙩 𝘿𝙪𝙚𝙩 explores the poignant absence of the last of a species by commemorating the final song of the Kauai ōō, unanswered in its solitude. The last birdsong was fed into a Machine Learning model created to record human voices, but instead is listening to the birdsong learning and recreating the response. This second song will join him in a technological afterlife. This is a moment frozen in time, of an impossible duet. The AI will try to learn the song before dawn.

Diana Sanchez is a design researcher, writer and media artist based in the US. She also has been part of interdisciplinary teams with scientists, for both artistic explorations and bio-design projects. Her work asks questions around care in techno-science, climate emergency and the notions of spirituality in human and non human animals in the era of automation and advanced living sciences, and how all the above define and stretches what we find sacred, true, and meaningful.

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙒𝙚 𝘽𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 by Ariana Gerstein and Monteith McCollum

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙒𝙚 𝘽𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 draws inspiration from a street in an old neighborhood in Athens. The city is central to Ariana Gerstein’s documentary project which embodies layers of overlooked history amidst the backdrop of the Acropolis. The installation highlights enduring marks of the past, from century-old markets to war scars, intertwined with personal narratives of familial heritage. Through projecting onto hanging clothes, Gerstein emphasizes the shared memory woven into the fabrics we carry. Ariana Gerstein, a recent recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship, is an artist and educator who works with experimental non fiction forms. Collaborator Monteith McCollum is a filmmaker, sound, performance and installation artist who has collaborated with Gerstein on many documentary projects. 𝙎𝙈𝘼𝙍𝙏 𝘾𝙞𝙩𝙮 by Artific3

𝙎𝙈𝘼𝙍𝙏 𝘾𝙞𝙩𝙮 by Artific3 is a mixed reality interactive game table that provides a tactile and accessible learning experience about modular energy grids. Visitors place fiducial marker game pieces on the table to generate projection mapped cities and power plants. Cities grow while they are powered, and their denizens give feedback with cartoon symbols and animated actions. Wind, solar, and coal generators all react differently to weather conditions, allowing players to experiment with different methods of power generation and learn about diverse and resilient power grids. Artific3 is a creative technology collective created in 2022 by LA-based artists Audrea Wah and Ilai Gilbert while working with Emilija Worthington on two exhibits for Explora, the non-profit children's science museum in Albuquerque. The three met at the School for the Art Institute of Chicago and now collaborate remotely and in-person. Artific3 was awarded the EPSCoR science education grant to build a collaborative experience about SMART grids aimed at teens and younger audiences. ⭐️Less than one month to submit for CURRENTS 2024 Art & Technology Festival. Submission deadline on November 15th- link in bio!🔗 Shown this past June, 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘃𝗲 (2021) by The Lo-Def Film Factory is the culmination of a year’s work collaborating with artists, academics, activists and young creatives as the pandemic took hold of South Africa. Despite difficult circumstances, Amy Louise Wilson and Francois Knoetze were able to collaborate remotely, or find safe ways of holding creative workshops where they could generate and share research and ideas. This VR work is an archive which re-imagines the existing archival material, much of which has been lost or destroyed, or told from a position of power. They aimed to find ways of unearthing buried narratives and bringing them into light. (VR trailer courtesy of the artists) The Lo-Def Film Factory is a participatory community cinema initiative created by artist Francois Knoetze and performer/writer Amy Louise Wilson. Employing an experimental praxis which emphasizes co-creation and mistake-making, the collective aims to create a space for storytelling through the democratization of filmmaking.The collective was formed in 2019, when it first took the form of a DIY pop-up film studio which was open to the Bloemfontein public. Since then, the collective has run workshops and worked together with various Cape Town communities. The initiative places value on the transmission of ideas/lived experience over high production value.
