William T. Carson’s relationship with coal began long before it became his primary artistic medium.⁠
⁠
Growing up on a cattle ranch in rural Montana, surrounded by coal mines, Carson developed an enduring interest in the material and its relationship to the landscape.⁠
⁠
His practice has since expanded across painting, sculpture, sound performance, and time-based installation, exploring cultural relationships to fossil fuels and the ways we assign value to natural materials.⁠
⁠
Carson’s interest in geological time was further informed by his years working with the creative legacies of Nancy Holt and Robert Smithson at the Holt/Smithson Foundation.⁠
⁠
In Time Out of Time, these intersecting experiences inform a body of work that considers the relationship between the human experience of time and the geological processes that shape our world.⁠

Why does a single day sometimes seem to stretch indefinitely, while entire months pass almost unnoticed?⁠

William T. Carson’s Time Out of Time examines the paradox between chronological time and our subjective experience of its passage.⁠
⁠
Although clocks measure time through predictable intervals, our perception of duration is far less consistent. Memories persist in the present, individual moments expand or contract, and our relationship to time changes as we grow older.⁠
⁠
Through paintings, sculpture, and time-based installation, Carson explores these overlapping temporalities, bringing the measurable and immeasurable into conversation.⁠
⁠
The exhibition invites us to consider how time shapes our experience of the world, even as its deeper nature remains difficult to grasp.⁠

In Time Out of Time, William T. Carson brings geological and astronomical time into proximity with the measured rhythms of everyday life.⁠
⁠
Working primarily with coal and mica, Carson creates paintings, sculptures, and installations that explore the relationship between material transformation and the passage of time.⁠
⁠
The exhibition considers the possibility that deep time, while difficult to comprehend intellectually, might become perceptible through our encounters with material, sound, light, and beauty.⁠

To hold a piece of coal is to hold ancient sunlight.⁠
⁠
Coal has been a primary material in William T. Carson’s practice for more than a decade. Formed from plant matter buried and compressed over roughly sixty million years, it places the duration of a human life against a vastly different measure of time.⁠
⁠
In Carson’s Second Nature series and O’Clock, compositions derived from clock faces emerge through coal and fragments of light-catching mica. The familiar divisions of hours and minutes meet a material history that cannot be meaningfully contained by them.⁠
⁠
An hour may appear almost weightless beside sixty million years, yet deep time accumulates through the same passage: one moment following another.⁠

Bringing deep geologic time into proximity with the fleeting present, Carson considers the ways time is measured, experienced, and embedded within material.⁠
⁠
Coal—formed from plants that absorbed sunlight in Montana roughly sixty million years ago—appears throughout the exhibition alongside mica, water, and found industrial forms. Clock-inspired compositions and a functioning clepsydra bring mechanical time, lived time, and the immense duration of the earth into a single encounter.⁠
